Occupational Summary

Produce Duke Department of Theater Studies plays and musicals, workshops, and guest artist residencies. Work closely with departmental faculty to insure integration of performances into the curriculum, mission, and goals of the department. Teach one Technical Theater/Production Management course each semester.

Work Performed

Producer for departmental plays, musicals, distinction projects and workshop performances and manage guest artists visits.

Manage production budgets.

Hire guest artists in coordination with their agents and craft guilds.

Company management including housing and travel arrangements for visitors.

Conduct production meetings.

Coordinate with Theater Operations (a division of University Center Activities & Events) personnel to ensure appropriate technical staffing of departmental productions and events.

Advise student leaders involved in student productions on departmental production practices.

Teach two courses per academic year in the areas of producing, production management, stage management and/or technical theater.

Collaborate with faculty and students on production season planning (calendar, budget, space, curricular needs, etc.), including mainstage productions, guest artists and classes requiring a performance component.

Represent department with Vice Provost for the Arts, Duke Performances, Theater Operations (UCAE), other academic units, students, and the university box office in matters concerning departmental theatrical productions and visiting artists (actors, playwrights, directors, designers, vocal coaches, fight directors, scholars, etc.).

Write and report on departmental grant requests in support of productions and guest artists. Represent Theater Studies in the university performance space allocation process of Sheafer Theater, Reynolds Theater, Von Der Hayden Theater, Page Auditorium, and non- traditional performance spaces.

Manage calendar for Brody Theater and Bryan Center 127 (rehearsal studio).

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

MFA in Theater Production Management or similar sub-discipline required.

 

Experience:

At least 5 years experience as a production manager in an academic institution or non-profit theater required.
