Occupational Summary

Manage the activities of the Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium related to scheduling, equipment, fiscal management and communications within the consortium and among its users.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate the ship time requests; work with the ship scheduling committee to prepare schedule for CAPE HATTERAS; revise schedule as necessary.

Manage and coordinate the use and maintenance of the Consortium research equipment; work closely with the Research and Equipment Development Committee to ensure Consortium equipment meets the needs of its users.

Maintain communications with ship users to keep the Consortium aware of their needs and to inform them of developments in equipment and ship scheduling; design and implement a cruise debriefing system to evaluate Consortium services; produce a regular newsletter to maintain communications within the community involved with CAPE HATTERAS.

Determine fiscal requirements for the Consortium and prepare budgetary recommendations; coordinate budget maintenance and purchasing activities.

Plan and schedule work for the group, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and conclusions. Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Serve as Director in his/her absence.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through a bachelor's degree program.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires five years in an administrative, financial or research support capacity, or other business related background in order to acquire skills necessary to manage a variety of activities for the Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium (DUNCOC) such as scheduling of research vessel, monitoring of equipment usage, fiscal management, and communication with researchers.
