Occupational Summary

Direct the development function for the Duke Chapel. Work with the Dean and senior Chapel staff to set objectives and goals and identify fund raising needs and priorities for individual areas. Advise the Dean on overall development strategy and on major gift cultivation and stewardship in particular. As a member of the Chapel's senior management team, participate in strategic planning and represent the Chapel to key constituencies, internal and external, in partnership with other senior staff.

Work Performed

Direct the development function for the Duke Chapel.

Work with the Dean and senior Chapel staff to set objectives and goals and identify fund raising needs and priorities for individual areas.

Advise the Dean on overall development strategy and on major gift cultivation and stewardship in particular.

As a member of the Chapel's senior management team, participate in strategic planning and represent the Chapel to key constituencies, internal and external, in partnership with other senior staff.

Design, implement and evaluate strategies for the solicitation of funds including major gift cultivation and stewardship, individual annual giving, and foundation grants.

Create metrics to determine the most efficient and effective means for fund-raising and support of the Chapel.

Develop and maintain relationships with prospects to develop their interest and participation in Duke University Chapels priority fund raising projects.

Staff and manage the Chapel's Development Committee and its Friends Advisory Board.

Maintain a good working relationship with university development and coordinate the Chapel's development activities according to university protocols.

Coordinate the submittal of Chapel development information to university major gift officers.

Research and write grant applications to foundations and other potential funders.

Consult with Chapel staff and others, as appropriate, regarding details and status of proposals.

Direct and organize the annual giving effort of the Chapel; develop strategies to meeting annual fund goals; identify and solicit new prospects; maintain liaison with University Annual Fund staff to coordinate annual fund activities.

Manage staff and coordinate the work of designated employees reviewing completed work for adherence to instructions or correctness.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Maintain and develop procedures in coordination with and consistent with established recording procedures of the Office of Gift Records to ensure accurate and effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgment and follow-up on all private gifts to Duke Chapel.

Determine fiscal and personnel requirements of office and prepare budgetary recommendations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

 

Experience:

Work generally requires a minimum of five year of successful experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in an education setting; demonstrated ability to handle multiple complex fundraising activities simultaneously and to coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment; experience working with volunteers and volunteer groups; demonstrated successful experience in soliciting five and six-figure gifts. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
