Occupational Summary

Manager of art preparation, installation team and overall responsibility for smooth and efficient flow of art related activities. Exhibition designer has the knowledge of the museum best practices and technical expertise in areas of art installation and handling, woodworking/carpentry, matting and framing, gallery lighting design and implementation, maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment and art packing.

Work Performed

Advises curators on visual design, layout and organization of exhibitions from inception to installation.

Responsible for the overall appearance of all exhibition spaces for each exhibition including wall configuration, art installation, exhibition furniture, lighting, work labels, wall signage, and wall color.

Designs wall layout for each exhibition space, in consultation with curator.

Plans and draws scaled pavilion wall layout including art objects, gallery furniture, and wall text using ArchiCAD design software.

Designs object mounts specific to the requirements of individual works of art.

Designs exhibition furniture such as platforms, pedestals, mounts and vitrines.

Ensure that all objects in exhibition spaces are secure and that accessibility standards are met.

Advises curators on framing needs, including mounting, matting, and types of frames.

Designs shipping crates unique to each artwork for both domestic and international shipment.

Coordinate with registrar on shipping needs.

Defines, implements, and maintains high aesthetic standards while ensuring positive visitor experience.

Works closely with senior curatorial staff, registrar, and others.

Supervise wall construction contractor and paint contractor and ensures deadlines are met.

Manages preparatory and installation staff.

Creates yearly budget for exhibition installations.

Participates in weekly collection committee meetings and meets regularly with individual curators and related staff.

Confers with registrar and other staff on conservation needs.

Travels with curator to research upcoming exhibitions and assess art works for installation needs and design improvements.

Consults with and travels to outside venues to assist with design and technical components of Nasher Museum organized travelling exhibitions.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in arts, architecture, or design-related field.

 

Experience:

Work requires four years of experience managing exhibition design, wall configuration, art installation and carpentry. Demonstrated track record for collaborating with curators and team of peers to create compelling exhibition design that underscores exhibition themes, knowledge of installation and construction techniques, building codes, security standards, accessibility guidelines, and electrical requirements.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

Skills:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, budget oversight, project management, problem solving and leadership skills. Ability and willingness to stay abreast of emerging design technologies. Art handling and carpentry experience.
