Develop and manage university-wide interdisciplinary strategic programs and initiatives, with a focus on innovative educational initiatives, principally including Bass Connections and Duke's growing range of summer "plus programs." Provide high-level project management for strategic undertakings at the request of the provost and vice provost. This role requires working with faculty and administrators across all Duke University schools, University Institutes and Centers, and administrative units to develop programmatic strategy, cultivate support for initiatives, implement and evaluate pilots and more enduring programs, consult with faculty and administrators who are working to embed features of signature programs into their own research strategies and curricular programs, and, as a result, navigate wide-ranging and complex academic and administrative systems. This role reports to the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies.
Provide strategic direction and oversight of interdisciplinary university-wide education programs including Bass Connections, summer research programs, and other emerging initiatives, which collectively engage more than 1,400 students and faculty annually.
Work closely with faculty and academic leadership to develop strategic plans to strengthen and scale interdisciplinary university-wide education programs (e.g., Bass Connections, summer research programs) to meet student demand, and to build greater synergy across those programs and with degree programs within schools, as well as related university priorities like the Duke-Durham partnership.
Develop plans to implement new strategic priorities as determined by the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies or the Provost (e.g., overseeing implementation of Duke???s 2030 Initiative; help to launch the Center for Community Engagement with the Office of Durham & Community Affairs; develop partnerships with Durham Tech); provide high-level project management to coordinate implementation of those plans, working with leadership, faculty, and staff across campus as necessary.
Coordinate the Interdisciplinary Strategy Council ??? a university-wide body charged with advising the Provost and Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies on ways to sustain and strengthen interdisciplinarity at Duke. This includes working with the chair and VP for Interdisciplinary Studies to set the agenda and execute on special projects as defined by the council.
Develop resources, guidance, and faculty development programs to facilitate the creation of more project-based courses and experiential learning opportunities, including working with Duke Learning Innovation to run the Collaborative Project Courses Faculty Fellows program, with DukeEngage, and other interdisciplinary programs across campus.
Develop resources, guidance, and trainings to ensure effective team collaboration in programs such as Bass Connections and the summer plus programs. This includes maintaining Bass Connections??? team resource center and running a Graduate Summer Academy course on Project Management.
Partner with faculty and administrators to resolve programmatic challenges including, but not limited to, research/administration, academic crediting and grading, student engagement, team cohesion, and equitable engagement with community partners.
Provide leadership to Bass Connections staff and students, including overseeing hiring and performance management. Provide mentorship to staff running affiliated academic programs (e.g., summer "plus programs").
Serve as a strategic adviser to the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies, especially around overarching interdisciplinary priorities, new initiatives, engagement with peers across higher education, and fundraising.
Provide administrative direction and coordination for current and long- range policies for Bass Connections and other cognate programs, looking to provide consistent but streamlined guidance wherever possible.
Work through the Duke faculty governance systems in all schools to develop appropriate academic crediting mechanisms for Bass Connections and other related efforts for both undergraduate and graduate student participants.
Oversee the development of robust evaluation and assessment mechanisms for Bass Connections and possibly other programs; serve as a resource around evaluation and assessment for other programs.
Provide guidance to faculty on the development of appropriate rubrics to assess student learning, particularly related to collaborative, project- based work.
Manage risk associated with interdisciplinary research/education programs, including, but not limited to, travel and projects engaging with minors by partnering across the university to provide faculty with consistent guidance and support.
Develop and manage systems to reliably and efficiently track and report on a range of program data.
Supervise efforts to communicate relevant information about Bass Connections and affiliated programs to various audiences (students, faculty, administrators, donors, media, external audiences).
Build relationships across the university to ensure the engagement of faculty and students in Bass Connections and affiliated programs.
Develop mechanisms to facilitate and support projects and programs that equitably engage community partners.
Connect with other universities to share lessons learned and best practices for project-based learning.
Engage in external writing and speaking to raise the profile of Duke???s interdisciplinary, project-based learning programs.
Manage an annual budget of ~$2M. Prepare annual budgets; monitor, verify and reconcile expenses; develop forecasts for future program growth and new efforts.
Oversee management and stewardship reporting for ~40 endowed funds totaling $55M.
Develop relationships and MOUs with university partners to ensure the effective governance of ~30 endowed funds totaling $30M shared between the provost office and other units.
Set financial policies for Bass Connections and affiliated summer programs to ensure that resources are used well and in accordance with university policy and donor intent.
Collaborate with University Development to raise funds for summer programs, emerging Bass Connections priorities, and other interdisciplinary initiatives.
Assist the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies in developing overarching fundraising strategy and supporting materials related to particular fundraising priorities.
Education/Training: | Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Master's degree program. |
