Occupational Summary

This position reports to the Associate Dean for Graduate Student Affairs (GSA) in The Graduate School (TGS) and is responsible for overseeing efforts to design, deliver, and improve services and programs that support graduate students from entry to completion of their degrees. The Director is responsible for the daily administration and development of recruitment and retention and belonging initiatives. The Director is expected to create and promote graduate education programming that enhances the quality of student life and is expected to act on their own initiatives in developing and delivering student-focused activities

Work Performed

Recruitment Programming

Collaborate with TGS Admissions to establish a recruitment plan, which will include visits to other colleges and universities, participation in recruitment fairs and workshops, and pre-application visitation programs for prospective students.

Develop recruitment publications, materials, and workshops, and partner with faculty and students to build a robust network for identifying and recruiting prospective graduate students.

Create, deliver, assess, and refine recruitment strategies for Ph.D. and masters students.

Leverage the EDGE Collaborative and develop other partnerships to establish a comprehensive network for identifying and recruiting graduate students.

Coordinate summer research opportunities and Boot Camp for prospective students and assist graduate departments and faculty with the administration of their summer research and post-baccalaureate research programs.

Collaborate with faculty/ staff in TGS Masters programs and external partners to explore the development of inter-institutional 4+1 programs.

Retention Programming

Create, deliver, assess and refine programs aimed at retention of current graduate students. These strategies will involve effective relationship building with academic departments and faculty, assisting departments with best practices, and working closely with leadership of TGS on overall policies and practices. Develop and deliver services that support belonging within the TGS student community.

Support individual students by providing counseling and suggesting resources that address the academic, financial, social, personal, cultural, and other pertinent needs of graduate students.

Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Equity to deliver faculty, student, and departmental training in crisis management and cultural sensitivity.

Administrative Responsibilities

Assess and evaluate peer initiatives and make recommendations for change to enhance effectiveness of GSA.

Prepare regular periodic progress reports that reflect student development activity, issues, challenges, and accomplishments, in collaboration with the Associate Dean.

Support for TGS Graduate Student Affairs

Support planning and implementation of Graduate Student Affairs programming, including but not limited to Graduate Student Appreciation Week, New Student Orientation, Ph.D. Hooding and Deans Awards.

Serve as a liaison for Graduate Student Affairs with graduate student organizations, individual students, faculty, and staff. Advise graduate student group leaders on organizational, business, and financial administration in monitoring student budgets.

Build relationships on campus and beyond, including colleagues, faculty and students in Trinity College and the professional schools as well as peer institutions, professional associations, and national graduate education consortia.

Support dissemination of TGS work and accomplishments by developing materials for national presentations and publications.

Play a proactive role in GSA team meetings and goal setting and perform other duties to ensure effective operation of the GSA Office.

Assist with development of publications and resource materials for GSA, including, written and visual media.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a knowledge and understanding of college experience and student life as well as analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

 

Experience:

Work experience of at least 3 years in related area is required, with preference for those who have earned a doctorate. Must have experience in university setting, broad knowledge of higher education, and specific knowledge of issues related to graduate education.
