Occupational Summary

Develop and implement projects and ideas for disseminating news about Duke University and for publicizing the University, its programs, activities, faculty, students and staff.

Work Performed

Produce materials for distribution to the news media and others to publicize the University, its programs, activities, faculty, students and staff.

These may include written materials such as news releases and features and/or multimedia materials such as videos or online features, as directed.

Develop and implement strategies for bringing these materials to the attention of desired audiences through online networks and other systems.

Track developments in the changing media world and identify opportunities for Duke to expand its outreach, such as with new programs or partners.

Develop and maintain professional contacts and affiliations with the news media to facilitate and promote the dissemination of news and publicity about the University.

Develop and maintain working relationships with University faculty, deans and administrators within an assigned area; consult with faculty, deans and administrators on publicizing and promoting their activities to the news media.

Monitor and analyze programs and activities at Duke University and develop appropriate strategies for publicizing them to the news media.

Assist in planning and coordinating a proactive information services program for Duke University.

Assist in coordinating news conferences and other special events in cooperation with other Office of News and Communications (ONC) staff.

Handle media inquiries, assist with emergency communications and respond to after hours reporter calls, as assigned.

Supervise freelancers, students or others to produce needed materials.

Collaborate with colleagues within ONC and other parts of the university.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline.

 

Experience:

Work requires two years of directly related writing experience.
