Occupational Summary

Directs the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL) operations, the DHVI safety and select agent programs, and the DHVI facility operations. Responsible for the related budgets, planning, and management in support of the research programs and serves as an advisor to faculty and staff in providing guidance and resolving technical problems.

Work Performed

Direct and oversee the day to day operations and staff for the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL) collaborating with other entities within Duke to ensure safe and effective operations of the RBL.

Manage and oversee the DHVI Disaster Preparedness Plan including the development and implementation of emergency response procedures. Oversee the Select Agent Program to ensure compliance with CDC, USDA, Duke, and DHVI standards.

Coordinate and oversee the operations of the Duke Infectious Disease Response Training (DIDRT) consortium and/or other safety related programs.

Direct overall DHVI safety program and supervise safety staff. Develop and implement safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training for all aspects of DHVI safety and research; lead and direct the DHVI safety committee.

Oversee safety compliance in collaborating institutions within the CHAVI (Center for Human AIDS Vaccine Immunology) programs and provide biosafety consultation / support service to other Duke University entities.

Oversee the DHVI Laboratory Assistant Program to ensure appropriate safety and laboratory support for the DHVI research operations.

Direct and plan all phases of the maintenance, repair, and construction of DHVI facilities operations, oversee space management program, and manage facilities budget in collaboration with DHVI Finance.

Monitor and coordinate DHVI capital equipment program and manage the DHVI cold storage maintenance, monitoring, and inventory program.

Manage building and laboratory access and signage programs.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Master's or Doctoral degree in a discipline related to biosafety. A candidate with a bachelors degree might qualify with extensive experience. Certified Biological Safety Professional OR eligibility to qualify for this examination and completion within a two-year period after hire.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, including biosafety.

Biomedical research and management preferred
