Occupational Summary

The Vice President for Durham and Regional affairs will be responsible for shaping and directing the University's relations with the immediate external community, including Durham and the region.

Work Performed

The Vice President will lead the development of strategy and policy for Duke's contributions to economic development in Durham and the revitalization of commercial districts near campus; for its partnership with Durham Public Schools, Durham Technical Community College, and NCCU; for neighborhood development in the areas adjacent to the Duke campus; and for Duke's relations with the Research Triangle Park and other economic partners.

Direct the University's efforts, in partnership with other local parties and agencies, to visualize a socially and economically vibrant future for the city and region and to take steps to move toward this future.

Projects include development of the Central Campus and the efforts to aid in the economic development of Ninth Street, Main Street between East Campus and Downtown, and the downtown area itself.

Work with the Senior Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications to improve communications with our workforce, many of whom reside in Durham, about university mission and activities; building bridges to other parties to regional development; and building capacity for strategic thinking and planning in city and region, including attention to issues of infrastructure support.

The internal and external individuals and groups that the VP will interact with include Senior Leadership; the office of community affairs; the Duke Real Estate Office; City Officials; Public school officials; higher education officials; neighborhood groups and regional economic development councils and foundations.

The Vice President will report to the President and be a member of the Senior Leadership.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a related discipline; Master's degree preferred.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
