The Assistant Director, Leadership Development (AD, LD) of the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program (RSLP) is charged with designing, facilitating and managing a comprehensive leadership program for Scholars that is aligned to the Program's theory of leadership development. In this position, you will partner with the Executive Director to co-lead on programming and learning for first, second and third-year Scholars, creating conditions and facilitating experiences that fuel transformation at the level of the self and group. You will also be charged with designing and managing systems that effectively meet the needs of Scholars and support holistic leadership development within the RSLP. Additionally, you will partner with other members of the RSLP team on All-Scholar programming, ongoing learning around the Program's theory of leadership development and agility teaming on other key projects that emerge. Thriving in this role requires a commitment to practicing transformational leadership and intentionally curating the community and space for Scholars to practice alongside you. It will also require you to be deeply curious about how young leaders learn and develop. You will be obsessed with user centered design and have the capacity, competence, and curiosity to reliably produce program designs that deliver on a Scholar experience that matches our leadership development theory.
The Assistant Director, Leadership Development is a key position within the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program and serves as one of the main designers, facilitators and coaches for our Scholars as they explore and grow their leadership and impact.
The AD, LD is charged with designing and facilitating a comprehensive leadership development program for first, second and third-year Scholars that is aligned with the Program's theory of leadership development. This includes researching and incorporating cutting edge developments in neuroscience, systems thinking and transformational leadership; designing and executing cohort-based learning experiences; coaching individual Scholars; and planning and executing critical All-Scholar programs (which includes but is not limited to Robertson Community Council, LEAD grants, Dinners for 6, Coffees for 8, NOLS and Connection Weekend). In addition to what's stated above in the occupational summary, this role requires the ability to plan and lead complex projects with an attention to detail and excellent communication skills for working with teammates, Scholars and outside partners.
The AD, LD will alternate working at the Program's Duke and UNC Chapel- Hill offices, using their discretion to determine how to best deliver on their work responsibilities and ensure the effectiveness of our leadership development model. Additional work for the AD, LD includes special projects vital for the operations and function of the Program. The candidate is a self-starter, who is able to manage competing priorities and projects, embraces the dynamic nature of human development and is committed to their own learning. Initiative and the enthusiasm working in ambiguous situations is necessary given the emergent nature of the Program's work and the shifting workloads at certain times of the year.
Objectives and Deliverables:
Design and implement a dynamic and comprehensive leadership development program for first, second and third-year Scholars
Stewarding the conditions necessary for a community of connection and belonging to emerge amongst each new Scholar cohort
Create learning opportunities that are responsive to the Scholar experience
Create and execute project plans for major programmatic initiatives and events, which includes sourcing and maintaining vendor relationships
Communications with Scholars, staff and outside partners that are consistently aligned to who we are and what we are up to
Creating and maintaining Scholar-facing operational systems that are user-centered
Professional Skills:
Designing and facilitating leadership development experiences and ongoing learning
Understanding of adult learning theory and its application for curriculum design
Coaching individuals and small groups in making meaning of their experiences
Competency in user centered design thinking, planning, and operations
Extraordinary strategic thinking skills, particularly in creating new solutions using quantitative and qualitative data sources
Creating and managing a budget
Project planning and management
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Computing competencies that extend beyond MS Office suite; ability to quickly learn and implement survey tools, social media, and communication platforms
