Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice President, School of Medicine Alumni Programs and Development is responsible for cultivating beneficial relationships and for fund raising outcomes among the Duke Medicine alumni constituency. The Assistant Vice President will lead strategic and financial planning for development and alumni relations initiatives, as well as develop and lead new fund raising programs around School of Medicine needs. The Assistant Vice President will manage a staff of fund raisers and program managers, will work collaboratively with colleagues in Duke Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs, and will be responsible for continually improving fund raising outcomes for the School of Medicine and for fostering good will among alumni. The Assistant Vice President reports to the Vice President for Duke Medicine Development and Alumni Affairs (DMDAA). As a member of the DMDAA senior management team, the Assistant Vice President will participate in efforts required to achieve the overall objectives of the Duke Medicine development program.

Work Performed

Design, implement and oversee a plan for support of the School of Medicine (SOM) from its alumni that integrates and maximizes fundraising and alumni relations.

Collaborate with DMDAA leadership in working with the Dean of the School of Medicine on fund raising plans and gifts for School of Medicine priorities. Work collaboratively with other development officers throughout DMDAA who are assigned to prospects with School of Medicine interests.

Lead strategic planning for School of Medicine Alumni Programs and Development, integrating programs to engage alumni and increase their affinity for, and connection to, the institution. Lead planning to develop programs to cultivate, solicit and steward gifts in support of School of Medicine missions of research and education and its priorities of faculty and student support, among others, via endowment and current use gifts.

Raise visibility for fund raising of scholarship endowments, professorships, research endowments, creating a pipeline for annual, major and principal gifts, as well as the tools to support efforts to secure such gifts.

Oversee the programs of the Medical Alumni Association to build alumni relationships.

Develop and enhance fund raising for the basic sciences, leading the Discovery Sciences Initiative.

Develop the inaugural DMDAA regional strategy, with programs that support alumni, donor and volunteer engagement and development goals and priorities across all of DMDAA responsibility areas.

Develop, implement and oversee programs for engagement of emeriti faculty and support efforts to increase philanthropic support from current and former faculty members.

Work on a daily basis with alumni volunteers, faculty, senior officers and administrators in Development, Alumni Affairs, Public Affairs, and across the School of Medicine.

Ensure that best practices in fund raising and alumni affairs are followed and, in collaboration with DMDAA practices, oversee the development and pursuit of performance metrics for fundraising staff.

Provide service leadership to the DMDAA Leadership Management Team and, as a member of this team, participate in long range planning including goal setting for DMDAA fiscal year and strategic plans, budgeting and campaign planning.

Supervise professional and support staff including staff in major gifts, annual fund, alumni relations and reunion campaigns. Work collaboratively with, and in support of, other DMDAA gift officers and staff assigned to SOM priorities.

Provide development support to the Dean, Vice Deans, Assistant Deans, for the School of Medicine; and when called upon to support the Chancellor's development and alumni engagement plan.

Ensure that School of Medicine donors receive appropriate stewardship through special events, recognition, and customized activities where appropriate.

Create and manage a limited portfolio of prospects, focusing on volunteers and major and principal gift prospects, except when breaking into new areas and prospects where other gifts are part of the process.

Recruit volunteer leaders and staff the Medical Alumni Council in support of alumni programming and alumni fund raising.

With the Dean's support, increase SOM representation on the Board of Visitors and explore other opportunities to connect alumni and friends to the School and its highest priorities.

Work across the organization to increase and enhance collaboration and integration of messaging for outreach, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship for School priorities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires communications, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Masters degree preferred.

 

Experience:

Minimum of 10 years of fundraising and management experience in development, including alumni relations, annual giving, major giving, and principal giving.

 

Skills:

Must possess necessary skills to solicit, negotiate and close major gifts at the highest level from alumni and friends.

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in a decentralized environment.

Ability to develop and implement a fundraising plan.

Ability to develop relationships on behalf of the institution.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

High level of creativity, initiative, and motivation.

Team orientation and willingness to set an example of effective leadership.

Demonstrated experience in managing programs and people in a complex environment, to increased proficiency.

Resilient and flexible, comfortable in times of ambiguity and transition.
