The Associate Vice Provost for Global Administration plays a critical integrative role within the university???s global enterprise. The position connects strategic planning and operational execution across academic, administrative, and international dimensions. The AVP-GA provides strategic and operational leadership for Duke University???s global administrative functions. This position ensures that the university???s international programs, partnerships, and activities are supported by effective, coordinated, and compliant systems that enable Duke???s global education, research, and engagement mission.
The AVP-GA oversees two core units for the university; the Global Programs Support (GPS) unit, and the Duke Office of DKU Relations.
Through the GPS office, the AVP-GA ensures that Duke faculty, students, and staff receive high-quality service and support to navigate administrative, financial, legal, and operational processes necessary for global teaching, research, collaboration, and experiential learning. The AVP-GA also ensures that Duke???s international activities align with the strategic direction established by the Global Priorities Committee (GPC) and the Provost???s Office, translating global priorities into actionable operational plans, risk frameworks, and institutional coordination.
Strategic Leadership and Global Administration
Collaborate with academic, financial, and administrative leadership to translate institutional global strategy into operational practice.
Provide university-wide leadership for the administrative, operational, and risk management aspects of Duke???s global engagement in collaboration with key administrative offices.
Oversee development and coordination of systems and policies that enable faculty, students, and staff to pursue education, research, and engagement abroad.
Ensure that Duke???s international activities are strategically aligned, efficient, and compliant with university policy and international standards.
Global Risk and Policy Coordination
Lead the implementation of a Global Risk Framework to guide decision- making about international operations, in partnership with Audit, Risk and Compliance, University Counsel, and the GPC.
Coordinate institutional review of new (and those up for renewal) international programs and partnerships to identify and assess operational, legal, and reputational risks.
Provide recommendations that balance innovation with risk management, ensuring Duke can pursue global opportunities responsibly and sustainably.
Institutional Partnerships and Communication
Promote communication and coordination across schools and units engaged in global activity.
Maintain clear and consistent communications for internal and external audiences about Duke???s global engagement and activities, including the Duke Global website and the underlying data.
Support and help coordinate global business development and fundraising opportunities.
Represent Duke in national and international forums to advance the university???s global strategy and reputation.
Global Programs Support (GPS) unit
Lead and oversee the GPS office, which serves as Duke???s central hub and "front door" for global engagement and inquiries.
Ensure that GPS provides responsive, coordinated, and solution-oriented service to Duke faculty, students, and staff involved in global research, education, and partnerships.
Guide GPS in supporting the GPC by providing staffing, analysis, and data to inform GPC deliberations; coordinating implementation of strategic initiatives; convening the Global Operations Committee; and supporting the Global Risk Framework. Serves as ex-officio member of the GPC.
Oversee GPS functions including international partnerships and MOUs, administrative navigation, global activity inventories, and global travel, health, and safety operations.
Foster collaboration across Duke???s central administrative offices to enhance institutional support for global work and ensure operations uphold Duke???s commitment to service, transparency, and collaboration.
Duke Office of Duke Kunshan University Relations
Lead the Duke Office of DKU Relations, managing all aspects of the Duke???DKU partnership, including academic programs, research collaboration, faculty appointments, student exchange, governance, and financial operations.
Provide advice and support to the Provost and senior leadership on DKU- related risk, strategy, institutional planning, and DKU administrative matters.
Coordinate Duke???s participation in DKU governance, including preparation for Board of Trustees meetings, liaison with the DKU Advisory Committee, and reporting to Duke leadership and the Board.
Oversee financial agreements, subsidy management, and collaborative research funds associated with the Duke???DKU partnership.
Work closely with University Counsel and other administrative offices to ensure institutional compliance and sound management of Duke???s global obligations.
Act as the lead subject matter expert, orchestrating collaboration among external legal counsel, a geopolitical advisory firm, and a global security provider to strategically guide negotiations for the next phase of DKU. In the event of elevated risk scenarios, mobilize Duke and DKU response teams to implement appropriate actions for all stakeholders, including a teach-out plan, staff and faculty relocation, communication and public relations plan, etc.
| Education/Training: | Master???s or Doctorate in higher education administration, international relations, business, or a related field. |
| Experience: | Minimum of 7???10 years of progressively responsible leadership in higher education administration, with experience in international program management, operations, or global partnerships. |
