The Director, Faculty Relations is a senior level HR executive who serves as a bridge between faculty members and academic leaders, ensures a fair and consistent approach to the management of faculty relations across Duke, and promotes faculty excellence in an environment where every member of the Duke community is treated with fairness, dignity and respect.
Serve as a central resource for both faculty members and academic leaders:
Facilitate dialogue and resolution between faculty members and academic leaders regarding employment-related issues.
Advise individual faculty members about available resources, processes and support regarding workplace matters.
Guide academic leaders on the process for managing and properly addressing faculty matters while navigating the unique nature of the faculty/institution relationship and academic freedom.
Partner closely with the Office for Institutional Equity (OIE), the Duke Office of Scientific Integrity (DOSI), the Office of Audit, Risk and Compliance (OARC), and others as needed.
Enhance consistency, expertise, compliance and fairness in faculty employment matters:
Available to all schools (including the School of Medicine and School of Nursing).
Coordinate with HR and others as appropriate for neutral and thorough investigation of faculty matters and provide support to involved parties, including the faculty member, throughout that process as needed.
Ensure complete, timely and appropriate management responses to concerns, including restorative measures as appropriate.
Prepare letters of expectations, letters of reprimand, notices of relief from duty, and other key communications.
Draft and track compliance with performance management plans ("PMPs"), formal coaching arrangements, and other forms of training and education.
Establish and improve institutional policies, trainings and processes:
Accurately track and report issues involving faculty internally (e.g., to OIE) and externally (e.g., to NIH or NSF through DOSI).
Communicate to the campus community about actions and efforts taken to address misconduct (in de-identified form) and strengthen institutional structures and processes.
Respond to pre-employment inquiries from other institutions about past policy violations by our faculty, and establish and manage a process for gathering such information about faculty candidates from other institutions on behalf of Duke.
Inform labor union bargaining and other activities related to adjunct faculty.
In coordination with HR and OFA, develop policies and practices on faculty management, particularly for conduct that is not currently covered by another office (e.g., bullying or retaliation unrelated to discrimination or harassment), and materials to train academic leaders and HR representatives on faculty matters and related policies and procedures
The Director, Faculty Relations will report to the Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer to ensure proper coordination between Human Resources and Academic Affairs.
Education/Training: | Work requires a Bachelor's degree. Master's degree strongly preferred. |
Experience: | Successful candidate must have seven years of demonstrated HR leadership experience in a dynamic academic culture working on faculty relations. Experience in a higher education setting required. Significant professional management experience and leadership skills. Must be able to build coalitions/networks to maximize success. Must possess expert knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining, human resources trends, programs, policies, practices and procedures. |
