Occupational Summary

The Executive Director of University Center Activities and Events leads a comprehensive department of auxiliary, service and student activities units including Administration and Finance, Conference and Event Services, Student Activities, Media Services, Theater Operations, Facility and Campus Operations, Technical Services, University Box Office and Information Desk.

Work Performed

Oversees facilities planning and development, and programmatic oversight for an expanding, multipurpose Student Center Complex that includes, but is not limited to, the Bryan Center, West Union, Plaza, East Union and other facilities.

Fosters and manages relationships with students, colleagues in Student Affairs, faculty, alumni, and vendors. Works in collaboration with key campus partners including schools, auxiliary service areas, and Facilities Management. Establishes the strategic direction for a comprehensive university campus activities and event support program that complements the missions and priorities of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.

Initiates revenue generation opportunities. Develops the annual budget and oversees complex financial operations in excess of $7M.

Establish and implement vision, goals and policies for the University Center Complex and associated facilities ensuring involvement of university stakeholders. Monitor progress of units in achieving goals and objectives for a comprehensive array of campus activities, theater and facilities operations and event support services. Continually assess and evaluate the day-to-day operations and programming to ensure effective service delivery and achievement of co-curricular outcomes.

Provide leadership in management of the department's budget and resources. Plan and oversee annual and multi-year budget development including capital plans. Seek and develop new opportunities for generating revenue in support of the University Center. Ensure that student organization accounts are handled in line with University and department policies and procedures.

Establish standards of performance and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. Provide leadership for staff recruitment, professional development and retention. Ensure that regular and effective performance reviews are conducted with all employees. Provide guidance to supervisors in personnel management.

Has overall responsibility for programmatic use of the multipurpose Student Center complex spaces to ensure use to maximum benefit to support vibrant social life on campus. Develop and implement policies and procedures, training, resource stewardship, technology integration for social and student organization facilities in consultation with appropriate University departments. Provide planning and oversight of facilities support activities. Ensure communications plans are developed to inform and promote co-curricular opportunities to the University community. Collaborate on the planning for large-scale events.

Establish the overall direction and coordination for a comprehensive social, cultural, educational, and leadership program for the University Center complex and affiliated programs. Ensures administrative and advising support for over 400 student organizations, including student government (DSG), student programming board (DUU), student-run cable television and radio station, and provides guidance on issues such as establishing new groups, recognition, advising, programming, and organizational problem-solving.

Serve on Division and University groups and committees, including but not limited to, SA Management Group, Emergency Preparedness Team, University Union Board, Council for the Arts and University Calendar Advisory Committee. Represents the University and Student Affairs at professional meetings and conferences. Responsible for staying current with trends and needs of students, professional literature and advances in the field and to integrate information, knowledge and technology tools into department practices and procedures.

Collaborates with Campus Life directors in providing leadership in the development of cross-department projects, programs and services that support the Campus Life vision and mission. Serves as designee for the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Campus Life in his/her absence.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Master's degree in a related field; doctorate preferred.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of at least eight years progressively responsible experience in student unions, student activities or student leadership programs in a higher education setting. Experience in facilities operations, financial management, student organization advising, and legal issues related to student activities management.
