Occupational Summary

Manage and provide supervision for both the Gross Anatomy Lab and Human Fresh Tissue Lab. Work with the faculty and instructors of the different SOM programs of the GA Lab to ensure all class needs are coordinated. Work with faculty, attendings, fellows and external vendors to schedule labs and provide specimens and equipment in the HGT Lab. Design, plan, coordinate, and implement a public relations program to promote and facilitate body donations to the Anatomical Gifts Program. Embalm and prepare donated cadavers; assist in disposal of remains at the conclusion of lab sessions. Supervise lab personnel and manage all equipment and specimen needs.

Work Performed

Be responsible for the overall operation of both the Gross Anatomy Lab and Human Fresh Tissue Lab including safety and compliance.

Develop, plan, coordinate, and implement a public relations program to promote and facilitate body donations to the Anatomical Gifts Program. Embalm and prepare donated cadavers for both the GA and HFT Laboratories; oversee and schedule the cremation of donated cadavers as needed; inventory, order and stock embalming materials and supplies; provide 24 hour on-call assistance for body donations and/or body acceptance.

Manage and provide supervision for the Gross Anatomy Lab. Serve as the coordinator of all faculty teaching in the lab to provide cadaveric needs and lab supplies and direction. Staff lab accordingly. Manage and provide supervision for the Duke HFTL. Serve as liaison for all Duke Faculty and corporate vendors using the lab and provide necessary specimens and equipment. Staff lab accordingly Manage HFTL schedule for internal and external users. Track specimen storage and usage and order specimens as needed. Oversee serology reports and latexing procedures.

Actively interact with funeral homes to educate them on ways Duke University Medical Center can benefit both parties involved; develop ways to be positively perceived by funeral homes, hospices, churches, other hospitals, and nursing homes; develop and implement ideas to enhance the relationship with donor families.

Provide supervision and schedules for the lab coordinator and lab assistant positions.

Determine ways Duke University Medical Center can monetarily compete with other medical schools with regard to funeral homes and how to become the funeral homes first choice for body donations.

Provide counseling to families concerning the donation of bodies for study; assist in filing death certificates, social security, Veterans Administration benefits, insurance claims, and other necessary paperwork; address questions and concerns of families regarding final disposition of cremated remains.

Coordinate with funeral homes concerning the degree of embalming allowed under medical school specifications so that funeral and memorial services may be incorporated in the body donation program.

Serve as Duke University's representative on the NC Commission of Anatomy.

Serve as Duke University School of Medicine liaison between directors and embalmers; keep the department informed of laws or regulations regarding anatomical gifts.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations of conclusions.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires knowledge of business practices and administrative principles normally acquired through two years post-secondary education.

 

Experience:

Work requires 2 years of embalming experience and 2 years of experience in an administrative, programmatic, or program support capacity to acquire skills necessary to plan, organize and implement programs and conferences and provide general administrative and organizational management.

Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
