Occupational Summary

Develop, manage, coordinate, and participate in a variety of administrative, educational, and other activities related to multiple community-based programs that are focused on education in Durham and the surrounding areas; manage and coordinate strategy across programs and initiatives to cultivate and maintain systems that promote Duke's commitment to forging and sustaining purposeful partnerships. Prepare and manage related budgets; develop policies and procedures consistent with program objectives. The Jumpstart, America Reads/America Counts (ARAC) and College Advising Corps (CAC) programs report into the Senior Director, who will also have oversight of all educational initiatives outside of these national programs. This position reports to the Associate Vice President/Associate Vice Provost.

Work Performed

Have strategic oversight of Jumpstart, ARAC , CAC and other educational initiatives spanning Pre-K through high school. Oversee program development to achieve purposeful partnerships between Duke and the community, specifically the education partners such as public school systems, after school programs and summer enrichment programs for students in public schools.

Collaborate with Associate Vice President for Operations, Research and Advancement on compliance and reporting of Jumpstart, ARAC and CAC programs. Create reports as needed for submission to funding organizations.

Supervise coordinators/senior coordinators and program director for Jumpstart, ARAC and CAC programs.

Recruit and supervise VISTA fellows across Jumpstart and ARAC and ensure compliance with VISTA rules and regulations by proactively working with NCCE.

Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative research techniques; investigate trends, make recommendations to AVP/AVP and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness.

Communicate regularly with NCCE to support VISTA roles, Jumpstart National Director to support Jumpstart Staff and National CAC, AmeriCorps and any other administrative agency that supports the education programs.

Oversee public relations activities such as newsletters, promotional materials, publications, press releases, ads and fliers as they relate to community development. Work closely with Senior Director of Communications to develop plans and schedules for release of publicity materials.

Advise the development of fundraising strategy to guide alignment to program priorities and goals.

Supervise program staff, independent contractors, unit student workers or interns as needed.

Respond to unit inquiries and requests according to established policies and procedures.

Work with DCA leaders and staff to design, promote, and plan engaging public events that cover topics aligned with mission and vision of the organization.

Work collaboratively with other university departments interacting with civic/community engagement partners. More broadly, oversee the development and implementation of systems to communicate effectively with partners in both routine and emergency situations.

Develop and sustain efforts to demonstrate and share best practices across education programs and explore overlaps with other SCIP focus areas such as housing and workforce development; develop policies and procedures that support institutional and student and faculty/staff engagement.

Recommend organizational structures, personnel, and resources to ensure a collaborative environment across all education-related community efforts.

Support AVP/AVP in various education team personnel functions as assigned, including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

With the AVP/AVP, work with DCA Communications to raise awareness throughout the Duke Community and North Carolina about education initiatives, including assisting in development of website materials, publication of a regular newsletter, and engagement with public relations efforts on and outside campus.

With the AVP/AVP, coordinate, plan, and sustain advisory councils for education as identified by Duke???s Strategic Community Impact Plan (SCIP) and Duke and Durham Today and Tomorrow Task Force, to ensure the community has increased feedback and input in existing and future efforts; develop consistent policies and mechanisms for working with community partners.

With the AVP/AVP, implement and share the SCIP goals for education. Share updates on progress with partners within and outside Duke. Collaborate with other units to develop and facilitate programming or resources aligning with the Strategic Community Impact Plan.

Support AVP/AVP in determining the fiscal requirements of the education programs; prepare budgetary recommendations; review and prepare grant proposals as needed; cultivate and support relationships with potential donors; pursue external and internal funding opportunities to advance education initiatives. Such work will also continue to include financial planning and fundraising specifically for the purposes of supporting Jumpstart, ARAC and CAC.

Prepare reports and presentations for various constituents outlining the impact of university-community partnerships; Conduct annual assessment measures and reports to advance the field of community engagement as it relates to education and demonstrate Duke???s commitment to its local community.

Coordinate Doing Good applications review for the Education team.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a Master's degree.

 

Experience:

Work requires a minimum of six years of full-time work experience related to higher education and/or community engagement, volunteer or international development programs, or other types of programs relevant to the duties of this position. Demonstrated experience in project planning, budget management, proposal development, navigating complex organizational environments, and effective mentoring of staff. Excellent analytical and communications skills, including the capacity to translate complex material for non-academic audiences through both oral and written means.
