Occupational Summary

To provide strategic vision and operational leadership that supports the development and delivery of academic programs of the highest quality, a program of research that promotes the practice of translational nursing care delivery and clinical practice that is congruent with School of Nursing and DUHS goals. The Dean and Vice Chancellor has overall executive responsibility for all aspects of the School of Nursing and serves on the executive leadership councils convened by the Chancellor of Health Affairs.

Work Performed

Lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the School that is congruent with Duke University and Duke Medicine goals and guiding principles.

In collaboration with DUHS, integrate School of Nursing programs and resources to address the needs of the Duke University Health System.

Provide leadership to enhance the School's national reputation as a premier provider of professional and graduate nursing programs. Ensure that appropriate accreditations are maintained while encouraging innovative approaches to enhancing the training and development of nurses.

Assess the needs of healthcare employers and emerging trends to ensure that the School of Nursing is positioned to meet those needs.

Responsible for development of the School's annual budget and then managing within available budgeted and discretionary resources.

Responsible for attracting, developing, and retaining a nationally renowned faculty.

Consider recommendations of the School of Nursing Faculty Search Committee and makes faculty hiring decisions, including compensation.

Consider recommendations of the Scholl of Nursing Faculty APT Committee. Approve and oversee submittal of requests for faculty appointment, promotion and tenure that are made to the applicable Medical Center and University committees.

Advance the scholarly activities of the faculty, including collaborative research with faculty across Duke. Appoint all administrative committees of the School.

Articulate, model, and support a positive work culture that embraces the values and principles of Duke University and Duke Medicine.

Serves as the principal voice for the School of Nursing with respect to broadening support at the local, state, and national levels.

Partner with the Chancellor for Health Affairs in expanding the philanthropic base for the School.

In collaboration with other Duke University entities, work to create and implement exceptional and innovative programs of education, research and service.

Serve as a member of multiple Duke Medicine and Duke University leadership committees.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

An earned doctorate in nursing or related field and be eligible for licensure as an R.N. in North Carolina

 

Experience:

A record of teaching, research, and educational leadership that is nationally recognized consistent with the rank of full professor. Demonstrated experience and success in developing external sources of support. Academic administrative skills typically acquired by a minimum of 10 years of experience, preferably in an academic health care and research environment.
