Occupational Summary

Provide leadership for the development of Duke Kunshan University (DKU) according to its vision and mission, consistent with the strategic direction set by the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees.

Work Performed

Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with local, mainland and international institutions, government organizations, universities, research centers, and similar entities. Specifically, the Executive Director will work closely with Duke University, Wuhan University, and the City of Kunshan to secure approvals from the Ministry of Education to obtain the appropriate legal status for DKU.

Work directly with Duke faculty and administrators to develop and implement academic programs (degree and non-degree) and research centers for DKU.

Recruit, hire, develop, and lead the senior administrative and support staff to provide a full range of academic and support services to students, faculty, and visitors. Provide administrative support and supervision to Duke and future DKU staff, with an emphasis on ensuring that the campus is fully functional prior to opening. Participate in the selection and evaluation of third party providers.

Supervise and coordinate operations of assigned academic and administrative units including the review of annual reports and strategic development plans. Monitor operations to ensure a campus environment that is safe, meets the needs of faculty and students, and operates within established budget parameters.

Contribute to the strategic development plans of the university and assist with fund raising initiatives, particularly in China.

Coordinate and facilitate regular communication among the partners. Represent Duke and the DKU initiative to visitors and guests as requested.

Attend Board meetings and provide reports concerning the operations of DKU to the Board and such other reports as the Board may request from time-to- time.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Strong academic credentials - Ph.D.

 

Experience:

Knowledge of, and experience with, an international research university such as Duke is highly desirable.

Proven track record in designing and developing high-quality programs, and teams. Good knowledge of the higher educational development in the People's Republic of China.

Experience working in, or with, academic institutions.

Proven track record in university management, preferably at or above the level of deanship.

Demonstrated entrepreneurial and leadership skills
