Occupational Summary

Develop and write complex, substantial, and institutionally important feature stories about Duke University and its programs, activities, faculty members, students, and staff.

Work Performed

Conceptualize, research, conduct interviews for, and write major stories for publishing.

Make and sustain contacts with faculty members, administrators, and student leaders to develop story ideas for the magazine.

Monitor and analyze developments in higher education and major issues of the day to develop story ideas for the magazine.

Assist in identifying freelance writers who have the appropriate knowledge base, skills, and sensitivity to write for a university publication.

Assist in editing the contributions of freelance writers with attention to the conventions of good journalism.

Assist in every aspect of a complex production, including editorial planning, proofreading, and design needs, with respect for deadlines and accuracy.

Cover campus events and write campus-news items.

Conceptualize specific features for the magazine's website, including discussion forums, slide shows, and audio clips. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or a related discipline.

 

Experience:

Minimum of five years of writing experience with a professional editorial organization.

OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
