The AVP will serve as a highly visible and accessible point of contact for the university and Durham communities and influence community investment decisions. The AVP will forge new internal and external partnerships across Duke and Durham's highly decentralized environments while keeping DCA's affordable housing, economic, and talent development goals at the forefront. A collaborative and inclusive leader, the AVP will guide DCA in transparently facilitating, developing, and communicating new programs and initiatives with reciprocity and equity.
The Associate Vice President will be an accessible and visible partner to city and county management and officials and will attend monthly board and neighborhood partnership meetings. Working in collaboration with the Vice President for Durham and Community Affairs, the AVP will nurture relationships with city and county managers and elected officials and build upon Duke's reputation as a trusted and transparent community partner.
Established as Duke's first official vehicle for engagement with Durham in 1996, the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership (DDNP) is the cornerstone program of Duke's university-community partnerships. The AVP will continue to guide the DDNP in partnering with and supporting neighborhood associations and leaders, especially in efforts towards more equitable and affordable housing. Supporting the Housing Strategic Council and maintaining regular contact with housing development leaders in Durham will be an important priority. Will attend meetings of DDNP, Durham Neighborhoods United, and other neighborhood convenings and steward key relationships and local investments such as Self-Help, the Latino Community Credit Union (LCCU), and M&F Bank.
Will serve as a facilitator for intentional and impactful collaborations between the University, other local anchor institutions such as Durham Technical Community College, NC Central University, and community partners. The AVP will strengthen these relationships, particularly with those organizations working with under-resourced or underrepresented populations such as Step-Up Durham. Will partner with economic and talent development-related boards and associations including the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, the Durham Black Chamber of Commerce, NC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Made in Durham, El Centro Hispano, and others.
Will serve on the senior leadership teams of the Vice President for Durham & Community Affairs and the Executive Vice President and will be prepared to engage across a variety of internal executive leadership meetings and committees including the Board of Trustees. Will be a key translator between internal and external groups and will provide timely updates as needed on special projects and developments in city or neighborhood zones. With the support of the VP and EVP, the will identify key partners across the university and health system and establish regular connection and communication across Duke's highly decentralized campuses. The AVP will provide guidance, consultation, and support on matters such as economic inclusion, housing, transportation, zoning, city-campus corridors, workforce development, and community- adjacent activities. Will also provide monthly reports in accordance with protocol for other shared AVPs.
The AVP will partner with the VP and EVP to develop comprehensive employment/talent development, economic development, and housing initiatives that align with the Strategic Community Impact Plan. The AVP will inherit an expert staff, and also have the opportunity to identify future staffing/resourcing needs. The AVP will also continue to build the internal network of colleagues involved in human resources, employment, talent development, and work-based learning as well as those involved in related efforts such as construction, real estate, supplier diversity, and information technology.
Within Duke's culture of data-driven decision making, the AVP will understand and evaluate the university's current involvement in economic inclusion and affordable housing in the region, and establish future goals in this area with a particular emphasis on supporting Duke employees. Additionally, the AVP will support activities related to the Neighborhood Action Plan. A strategic planner and collaborative partner, the AVP will assess capacity and needs related to local hiring, supplier diversity, and other business services and develop annual workplan objectives with the VP and EVP.
Education/Training: | Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree in business administration, public sector administration, public policy, or other related field strongly preferred. |
Experience: | Requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in a highly complex, matrixed organization such as a research university, public sector administration or other related field. |
