The Associate Dean for Clinical Department Administration and Finance is a senior administrative staff position reporting jointly to the Executive Vice Dean for Administration in the School of Medicine (SOM) and the Chief Operating Officer of the Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP). This position will be the key liaison between the clinical department Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), the SOM Deans Office, DHIP administration and other University administrative offices for financial, human resources, and other operational activities
Resolve issues raised by clinical department faculty and business managers on matters related to finance, human resources issues related to staff, faculty recruitment, space, benchmarks, systems, etc.
Work closely with the Compensation Office and the departments to resolve faculty compensation issues and help plan for the continued evolution of department compensation plans and review processes
Interact directly with Chairs and CAOs on finance, performance, and organizational structure questions; provide regular management reports to Deans Office and DHIP Administration
Conduct routine meetings with CAOs to disseminate information and discuss current issues Coordinate department financial and budget meetings with senior administration
Help CAOs negotiate, as needed, difficult topics between departments/centers (e.g., moving faculty from a department to a center, including issues related to sharing of indirect and space assignment) and other schools as well as SOM and DHIP
Assist SOM Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Office in administering faculty processes and policies with departments (e.g., faculty offer letter review, appointment requirements, etc.)
Work closely with SOM and DHIP Human Resources offices in the administration of human resources policies and processes involving the clinical departments within the SOM
Work closely with the Vice Dean for Scientific Integrity in coordinating research administration and compliance policies and processes with clinical departments Support SOM Executive Vice Dean and DHIP Chief Operating Officer in managing and coordinating Clinical Chair and SOM Vice Dean compensation
Make recommendations to the Executive Vice Dean on complex financial methodologies involving patent income flows, inter-campus relationships, cost allocations
Develop and manage a CAO mentorship program for new hires and CAOs with needed areas of development
Provide coaching clinical department CAOs and coordinate bi-annual CAO development retreats
Assist in financial redesign efforts relating to the methodologies for allocating central funds and for DHIP/DUHS/SOM clinical department funds flows and co-management
Establish relationships with finance professionals in the departments, University and Health System, leading to increased trust and cooperation
Serve as a key thought leader in the clinical budget process, including the effort to create consistency of accounting practices in the clinical departments
Support Chair and CAO metrics processes within SOM and DHIP

Continue to refine roles, responsibilities, and accountability methods for finance, accounting, and management functions which cross University, management center and departmental organizational lines
Assist the EVDA and the COO of DHIP with new strategies for efficiency and revenue generation
Responsible for supporting the Enterprise Department Business Review and Improvement work for the 18 clinical departments
| Education/Training: | Bachelor degree with Masters or CPA preferred |
| Experience: | Over 10 years of experience managing finance and operations in a school of medicine clinical department, academic physician practice plan or major health system service line Finance background, with education or work experience focused primarily on financial management Some experience managing human resources, facilities, faculty appointments or graduate medical education administration. |
