Occupational Summary

Position serves as the chief facilities officer for Residence Life, Housing, and Dining Services (HDRL). Provides leadership and direction for all housing and dining operations. Develops multi-year facilities plan and capital budget.

Work Performed

Provide strategic direction and management to a comprehensive multi-year housing and dining renovation and refurbishment program; collaborate with Duke Facilities Management Department (FMD); plan concurrent smaller annual (summer) renovations in coordination with the major renovations master plan.

Prepare long-range plans and annual budget for area. Manage assigned budget, monitor expenses in consultation with Director of Finance and Administration per established procedures. Oversees the purchase of all related equipment, supplies, and furnishings. Works with HDRL colleagues to purchase furnishings that meet campus needs and fit within the look and feel of the building/campus.

Provide leadership and guidance to a housekeeping organization charged with providing exceptional service to students in 29 residence halls.

Provide consultation and expertise to a team of three General Main- tenance Mechanic Supervisors and their teams of General Maintenance Mechanics.

Develop and implement an effective communication plan that assures assigned staff, residents, and other constituents are informed of main- tenance and housekeeping work, projects, and related efforts that are preformed in and around campus residences and dining facilities.

Develops and implements training for maintenance, housekeeping, and project management. Works in collaboration with FMD on training programs for maintenance staff and housekeeping staff who are bargaining unit employees.

Serve as member of HDRL leadership team; participate in strategic planning, policy and practice decisions, and the like. Represent the AVP and HDRL on committees and at meetings, as requested.

Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet department, division and university goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or construction management. Master's degree preferred.

 

Experience:

Minimum seven years progressively significant leadership of a facilities team or a construc-tion management team. Strong preference for senior level experience in housing/dining facilities management.

 

Skills:

Superior knowledge of one or more trades related to maintenance and housekeeping in residential or similar settings. Campus housing settings preferred, but hotel, hospital, and cruise ship settings are acceptable alternative settings.

Superior skills in planning projects and managing ongoing, routine maintenance requirements.

Strong budget development and management skills.

Superior communication skills: speaking and writing.

Demonstrated commitment to staff development and training.

Excellent ability to build and sustain positive and collaborative working relationships with a wide range of constituents.

Superior commitment to quality assurance and customer service.

Strong ability to translate priorities into field decisions.

Interest in and ability to work as a member of a team.
