Occupational Summary

Reporting directly to the Dean of the Duke University School of Medicine, and tightly matrixed with the School's Executive Vice Dean and Vice Deans, the Vice Dean and Chief Communications Officer will have responsibility for strategy, forward-looking plan development, implementation and evaluation of communications projects targeted to faculty and School staff, as well as other designated internal and external audiences.

Work Performed

- Managing the Dean's communications to department chairs and directors on key strategic issues and initiatives; to the faculty and staff regarding key decisions and issues and programs; to University and DUHS leadership and, where applicable to Trustees in coordination with University Communications.

- Research and draft important speeches and presentations to be delivered in faculty venues, committees and at national leadership and scientific meetings.

- Create, plan and implement communication plans related to specific School of Medicine initiatives regarding research administration, clinical research, advances in information technology, etc.

- Lead communications efforts related to the continued development of a culture characterized by a commitment to diversity, professionalism, integrity and an environment in which respectful challenging of each other's research is encouraged and protected.

- Manage all components of the School of Medicine website including content development, regular content review, regular freshening of information on homepage, etc.

- Regularly develop the Dean's newsletter to faculty, and lead the planning, drafting and internal promotion of the Dean's annual State of the School presentation.

- Draft and distribute internal announcements from the Dean/Vice Deans as needed; develop news releases - in coordination with the Duke Medicine News & Communications group - regarding key appointments within the School, key faculty awards, or other items related to the school. Coordinate with the News & Communications group related to the production and distribution of news regarding faculty research/clinical innovations/etc.

- Manage all components of annual Basic Science Day and Clinical Science Day events.

- Work with the Dean to write monthly reports for delivery to Medical Center Executive Committee and Medical Center Academic Affairs Committee (correct this if wrong but thought this was what MCAAC stands for)

- Build relationships with colleagues at peer institutions to gain insights/best practices in how common issues/challenges are being communicated and messaged.

- Ensure consistency of information related to the School across communications produced within departments, institutes, centers, Duke Medicine News & Communication, Duke Medicine Development.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, or a closely related field required; master's degree preferred.

 

Experience:

Minimum of 10 years of experience in academic, research or healthcare related communications, with 3 years of experience in a communications leadership position in a school of medicine, research institute, academic association, or in a university.
