Occupational Summary

Assist in the supervision of, and participate in, the installation, repair and maintenance of locks, door closures, electronic locking systems and panic hardware systems; estimate and write hardware schedules for renovation projects and new construction. Assume duties of Locksmith, Supervisor in his absence.

Work Performed

Coordinate minor maintenance, repair, installation and service of key systems in buildings and related security systems for the University and Medical Center campus including 12.2 million square feet of medical center space, classrooms, research laboratories, athletic centers, housing and auxiliary buildings.

Oversee the coordination, planning and scheduling for the installation, repair and maintenance of all major types of locks, door closures and panic hardware systems to conform to current federal, state and local safety and security regulations.

Review EAM Work Orders (WO) for accuracy and clear scope of work; review WO for proper fund codes; assign WO to the appropriate mechanic (s); review completed WO when necessary; ensure correct labor, materials and outside service charges are included; and bill out and close WO.

Develop and implement processes to ensure accurate and timely distribution of work orders to the appropriate mechanics.

Analyze and identify equipment, tools and processes that improve operating efficiency and or workplace safety.

Assist in coordinating the opening of locks by use of lock picking tools, dismantling or other methods; repair locks by replacement of worn or broken parts or by adjustment of recombination of locks to the master/sub master system in use.

Assist in planning, organizing and consulting with architects and occupants for new or renovated buildings in the design, modifications, or additions of keying systems.

Estimate time, cost, and amount and type of materials required for repair and renovation projects; requisition required materials; plan sequence of operations and determine methods to be used including, but not limited to, key cutting and duplication, adjusting or changing key combinations and recombination of any lock within the current system.

Assist determining the supplies, locks and equipment needed for overall shop operation and to maintain the security of the institution; responsible for inventory control and records. Utilize Buy@Duke to purchase materials and Contract services.

Assist with response to customer requests for service; conduct initial assessments to understand extent of the issue; troubleshoot and identify potential solutions; and involve other trades where necessary.

Assist in the planning and execution of all work to ensure day-to-day compliance with work processes and key metrics. Direct the documentation, implementation and execution of workflow process (i.e., planning, scheduling, preventive maintenance and work execution) to provide continuous improvement of maintenance and operational practices.

Participate in development of supplemental contract maintenance agreements with outside service providers to provide specialty services and additional labor in response to work volume changes and deadlines.

Integrate and coordinate work activities with Facility Operations Trades shops, as well as the Customer Service Center and DUES (Duke Engineering & Utility Services).

Assist in the evaluation work output of mechanics for quality, efficiency and timeliness. Identify continuous quality improvement opportunities for each service, determine appropriate improvements and implement through change control program. Handle any complaints pro- actively, documenting details and resolution of issues. Ensure details are readily accessible for the staff for future reference.

Develop strong working relationship with Local465 leadership and staff to ensure no interruption of services.

Represent FMD in a positive manner when interacting with University departments including academic, research, administrative, housing and athletics regarding the status of work orders.

Train mechanics on FMD procedures and processes.

Provide shop leadership to ensure a primary focus on resolving operational, safety and environmental problems with appropriate urgency and optimal efficiency.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Key/Lock Shop Manager.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires and educational background equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades and

North Carolina State Locksmith License required

Experience

Minimum five years experience in the maintenance, installation and/or repair of door closures and locking systems, two of which should be preforming journeyman level tasks associated with the locksmith trade, including experience in the layout of keying systems. Work within higher education, hospital or manufacturing facilities required.
