Perform and participate in a variety of technical tasks and activities related to the care of various animals.
Perform and participate in routine and standardized technical tasks such as the feeding and the monitoring of health status to provide for the health care of animals.
Evaluate potential problems relating to the health and social welfare of animals; notify supervisor of perceived problems.
Assist in the organization and scheduling of events to facilitate the performance of procedures related to research projects; coordinate and participate in the performance of routine and standardized tests to include weighing animals, obtaining specimens, and observing behavioral patterns.
Serve as liaison to the veterinarian in providing health care to the animals; administer daily treatments and medications for animals as instructed or required; assist in or provide routine and emergency medical treatment.
Report or take action to correct changes in environmental conditions which affect the well-being of the animals. Formulate and administer special diets to ensure adequate vitamins and trace mineral elements; determine animal food needs and place regular food orders with vendors, ensuring optimum cost and variety in diet; feed and water animals according to schedule. Ensure complete and accurate maintenance of all animal records.
Assist in processing health inspections and related requirements for interstate and international shipment of animals; transport animals, supplies, and materials; operate motor vehicle as required.
Anesthetize animals as required and serve as circulating nurse during procedures requiring anesthetized animals; assist in animal surgery as requested. Administer routine, post-operative and daily treatments to animals as instructed, prescribed and/or required; assist in diagnostic treatments such as performing routine hematologic and parasitologic tests and collecting blood and other diagnostic specimens.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Work requires an Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology with RVT. ALAT certification must be obtained within 16 months of hire.
Work requires one year of experience in a laboratory, animal care facility or related setting to become familiar with the technical tasks involved in the care of animals (dog, cat, and large animal acceptable).
OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
1. Clinical observations & evaluations of animal health status
2. Assist in surgery
3. Anesthetize and intubate dogs/cats
4. Administer daily treatments and medications
5. Basic animal restraint techniques (excluding primates)
6. Basic diagnostic lab techniques
7. Basic radiograph techniques
8. Participate in enrichment plan
DLAR Refining Skills:
1. Large animal handling skills
2. Rodent, guinea pig, rabbit, etc handling
4. Placing catheters
5. Prepare surgical packs
6. Intensive care and emergency care
