Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of technical tasks related to the installation, operation and maintenance of Van de Graaff or Mark III free-electron laser accelerators, ion sources and lasers in the Physics Department.

Work Performed

Perform a variety of technical tasks related to the installation, operation and maintenance of Van de Graaff or Mark III free-electron laser accelerators, cyclotrons, ion sources, lasers and related equipment and systems in the Physics Department.

Perform repairs on electronic equipment to include timing circuits, pulse generators, amplifiers, current integrators, Klystron modulators, oscilloscopes, power supplies and process controllers.

Perform assigned tasks in the installation and maintenance of accelerator related systems to include vacuum gauges, vacuum pumps, helium leak detectors, cooling systems and radiation warning devices.

Design and construct experimental electronic circuitry; prepare ink drawings of circuits and charts. Provide technical assistance to faculty, students and outside researchers as requested.

Independently operate accelerators and systems, such as ion sources, in a safe and reliable manner in the absence of faculty and staff.

Order equipment and parts used in assigned tasks.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of a specialized technical field generally acquired through a two-year Associate degree program in Electronics, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Experience

Work requires four years experience working with vacuum components and systems, motors, electromechanical devices, electronic devices and systems, control systems or other related components or systems to acquire skills necessary to install, operate and maintain Van de Graaff or Mark III free-electron laser accelerators and related equipment. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
