Occupational Summary

Implements and participates in activities involved in the scheduling, operations, and maintenance of Duke University transit vehicles; schedule operators for semester routes, when needed and coordinate charters.

Work Performed

Initiate and develop activities involved in scheduling, operation, staffing and maintenance of University transit operations and vehicles for passenger use; operate vehicles when necessary and on route.

Develop and maintain vehicle bus routes and charter activities; assist community in determining type of vehicle to meet the community need, apprise customer of charter charges; schedule / secure staff, complete forms and bill customer accordingly; prep and prep drivers with route information prior to as needed.

Coordinate scheduling and dispatched employees to route; monitor routes and track buses; update tracking system; reflect changes in staffing and post notifications as needed.

Develop and carry out work schedules for operators ensuring proper distribution of work assignments and adequate staffing of transit vehicles; oversee various personnel actions including, but not limited to, shift work, charters, substitutions, vacation schedules, and overtime work schedules.

Maintain operational records including, but not limited to, report and daily report on incidents/accidents; pre/post trip and verify accuracy of these and other records and ensure that records are properly maintained.

Involved in the development of preventive maintenance programs for University transit vehicles and equipment; inspect vehicles to ensure that they are in safe and post proper vehicles to tracking system; schedule maintenance and repairs for vehicles as needed.

Train and guide employees in the safe and proper performance of the operations of vehicles and use of equipment on campus; monitor/track performance and provide follow-up instruction where needed; Assist with telephone inquiries, support for questions and bus stop/tracking concerns as needed.

Operate all transportation-related products and services, analyze equipment requirements daily and nightly to fulfill routes, assign equipment for next shift and make any necessary adjustments to provide the best service.

Proactively modify and evaluate routes, processes and recommendations for increasing efficiency and cost reduction on a daily/monthly basis. Maintain daily operational paperwork and email of ongoing active transportation office. Learn and operate transit route planning software.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires the ability to provide instructions, prepare reports and coordinate the work of others generally equivalent to a high school education.

Experience

Work requires three years experience in transportation services.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

North Carolina Class A or B CDL with passenger endorsement required.
