Occupational Summary

Machine and process precision parts to fine tolerances and design, construct, install and repair complex instruments for scientific and/or clinical applications.

Work Performed

Machine and process precision parts to fine tolerances and design, construct and install complex scientific and/or clinical instruments using various instrument shop equipment to include precision lathes, milling machines, drills, welding and soldering equipment, and woodworking machines. Work under general supervision to plan, design and prepare drawings for con-struction of new instruments using considerable knowledge of shop mathematics and research techniques applicable to the design and construction of experi-mental instruments; determine method of fabrication and materials to use based on knowledge of materials, tolerances, stresses and machine tool limitations.

Make complex repairs, adjustments or calibrations within fine tolerances to malfunctioning instruments and equipment using various hand and power tools.

Independently consult with scientific or clinical customers regarding con-struction and modification of equipment.

Inspect completed work for accuracy and compliance with pertinent safety codes.

Provide technical instruction and guidance to students and faculty; assist in training lower level personnel. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a general background in machine shop equipment operation and metal or plastic work generally acquired through a technical or vocational high school education.

Experience

Work requires three years as an Instrument Maker or progressive journey level experience in instrument making or seven years experience in design and machining of precision parts for specialized equipment used in scientific research or clinical applications.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
