Occupational Summary

Perform specialized technical tasks in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of complex ultrahigh vacuum components and systems.

Work Performed

Perform specialized technical tasks in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of complex ultrahigh vacuum components and systems and experimental instruments and apparatus to include the design and modification of components and the development of plans including high voltage, clean room operation and maintenance, and other vacuum support technologies.

Design and construct a wide variety of complex ultrahigh vacuum components and special experimental instruments from blueprints and diagrams to include machining and fabricating of parts and assembling finished products, utilizing vacuum processing, installation and residual gas techniques.

Perform complex and extensive repairs on malfunctioning instruments by replacement of parts, soldering of connections and making adjustments by calibrations; establish and follow predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance.

Provide technical assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty and student researchers and to staff members for the resolution of special problems.

Monitor the use of equipment as appropriate; prepare orders for new and replacement parts and supplies; maintain related records.

Make work assignments; review the work of lower level employees; assist in training of new personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a knowledge of vacuum components and systems and vacuum support technologies normally acquired through a two-year Associate degree program in mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience

Work requires three years as a vacuum technician or equivalent to acquire competency in applying vacuum technology principles.

Credit for directly related experience is given on a two-for-one basis (i.e., four years of related experience are required in lieu of an Associate degree).
