Occupational Summary

Position assists in the management of a variety of activities involved in the editing and preparation of academic journals. The position also ensures the editorial quality of issues and manages the peer review process for academic work.

Work Performed

Evaluates manuscripts that are accepted for publication. Copyedits manuscripts, improving comprehensibility of prose, corrects technical errors, and imposing style guide.

Develops and oversees procedures, methodologies, and internal schedules for project management. Tracks all components of issues (manuscripts, art, permissions, publication agreements, etc.), ensuring that deadlines are met, and manages page allotments for journal volumes. Manages editorial logistics.

Corresponds with authors and academic editors to explain editorial approach and decisions on manuscripts as well as to respond to questions.

Balances editorial standards with schedules, deciding when work on an editorial stage has achieved an acceptable level of quality and outstanding problems have been sufficiently resolved and then releasing the issue to the next stage in the production process to meet publication dates.

Manages the online peer-review system for manuscript submissions. Supervises the maintenance of editorial files.

Supervises freelancers and student workers as needed.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Work generally requires at least one year of editorial or production experience in a publishing or related setting.
