Occupational Summary

Coordinate and participate in the overall operation of the Bryan Center Costume Shop to include support for theatrical productions in the areas of costume design, construction, and wardrobe needs.

Work Performed

Coordinate, participate in and supervise the overall operation of the Bryan Center Costume Shop to ensure an organized, efficient and safe environment for the purposes of theatrical production and student education.

Coordinate and supervise costume design, construction and wardrobe needs; implement decisions regarding costume construction; interpret renderings; recommend materials, and techniques.

Develop procedures and standards for the use of the Bryan Center Costume Shop by students and staff that accommodate the needs of users and ensures a safe working environment; instruct and supervise students and other shop users in sewing skills, shop methods and construction and finishing of garments; provide instruction and directions in the use of shop equipment, materials and techniques. Maintain costume shop calendar and coordinate schedule for all shop users.

Maintain and monitor financial records for costume shop expenses including labor expenses; make recommendations regarding equipment purchases.

Research historical information and assist designer with project concept regarding period, patterning, and implementation of production costuming.

Coordinate and perform modifications to costume stock; construct, rent, or purchase costume accessories; create paper patterns from designer renderings and take patterns to fabric; coordinate and participate in fittings; organize and supervise the purchase of materials for construction and maintenance of costumes.

Hire, train and supervise student employees; hire and supervise contract labor as required to complete work within budgetary guidelines; coordinate and supervise the efforts of student performing arts organizations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a thorough background in costume design normally acquired through a four year course of study in Theater or closely related field.

Experience

Work requires two years professional theater experience with an emphasis in costuming or related.
