Occupational Summary

Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits, appliances, systems, facilities, and related electrical controls and devices. Assign, direct and review the work of lower level employees. Assist in the training of new personnel.

Work Performed

Apply safety precaution pertaining to: Safety regulations and procedures; chemical safety, hazard communication program; personal protective equipment; lifting procedures, back injury prevention; flammable storage, housekeeping; fire extinguisher training.

Lay out, assemble and install wiring in University buildings in accordance with blueprints and NEC.

Size and install conduits, conductors, switches, outlets and junction boxes. Install disconnects, lights, devices and electrical panels; install motors, motor control circuits, electrical systems in hazardous locations and transformers; install battery banks, battery chargers and switch gear; install intrusion alarm systems and grounding systems in general facilities.

Calculate power requirements for electrical systems (conductors, protective devices, physical protection)

Service batteries (lead acid, Nicad, Lead Calcium)

Perform periodic switchgear maintenance of relays and control switches; troubleshoot switchgear circuits and control switches; replace circuit components (instrument meters, surge protectors, relays, control switches).

Troubleshoot motors, motor control circuits, across the line starters, battery banks and battery chargers.

Inspect and maintain power conditioners, and grounding systems in general and electronic facilities.

Repair/replace electrical appliances in general and electronic facilities. Troubleshoot battery banks, battery chargers, power conditioners, commercial electric appliances and grounding systems.

Interpret plans, sketches, wiring diagrams, and specifications; identify all electrical terms and symbols.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades training in electrical systems, schematics and relevant national, state and local codes. Requires National Electrical Code classes (internal), training on lockout/tag out (internal), and Fire stop certification (internal).

Experience

Work requires six years in electrical construction or maintenance, which may include time in an approved apprenticeship program.
