Occupational Summary

Perform technical tasks associated with the basic maintenance and repair of power equipment and garden vehicles. Monitor and assess need for maintenance and repair for buildings, greenhouses, and facilities as needed. Act as liaison between garden and FMD. Perform specialized horticultural tasks as necessary and oversee inventory of garden maintenance shop and support facility.

Work Performed

Perform basic maintenance and repair of garden fleet of gas and electric powered vehicles, tractors, utility vehicles and perform minor maintenance tasks for garden buildings and systems.

Conduct routine inspections of designated buildings, greenhouses, facilities, equipment and systems; perform preventive maintenance as assigned.

Assess need for, and make repairs and corrections to, facilities and equipment as required; notify Duke Facilities of required major repairs via the Facilities Work Order System. Act as liaison with Duke Facilities and any other contractor on site for building mechanical systems.

Advise supervisor of general condition of equipment, buildings and systems and any unusual problems or concerns; make recommendations for improvements and upgrades for budget planning; compile and present data to support recommendations.

Maintain sufficient stock/inventory of materials, tools and equipment along with an organized shop and system for employee use of tools. Maintain field and equipment maintenance records as directed; prepare reports and analyses as requested by grounds management.

Operate and perform routine and preventative maintenance and repairs on grounds equipment to include small power tools, blowers, shop equipment, etc.

Oversees condition and compliance of storage facility for fuel, pesticides, chemicals, and fertilizers. Maintains the inventory / stock of these products.

Design, construct, paint and repair, various mechanical systems, equipment, and or structures.

Assist horticulture staff with specialized tasks which may include operating garden equipment, pruning, applying fertilizer and chemicals, planting, site preparation, mulching, and other duties as assigned.

Provide instruction to staff members for the safe operation of specialized power equipment and vehicles.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a two year Associates degree with course work in skilled crafts.

State of NC pesticide applicators license required.

Experience

Minimum of four years maintenance and repair for landscape and building systems, experience related to the specific equipment or four years of trades experience with at least one year related experience.

Valid N.C. Driver's license is required.
