Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of routine and specialized crime prevention activities to include security surveys, crime awareness programs, and crime analysis.

Work Performed

Perform a variety of complex crime prevention activities to include the review and analysis of crime trends, criminal methods of operation, and developing strategies to address each.

Make recommendations to reduce and/or eliminate vulnerability to crime.

Perform various routine crime prevention duties on a periodic basis to include conducting security surveys, inspecting doors, windows, locks and alarms, recommending measures to minimize security breaches, based on industry accepted practices.

Conduct crime awareness programs; facilitate and encourage police community engagement; conduct engraving and registration of property, facilitate and coordinate the activities of the Citizen's Police Academy; and other assignments as directed.

Develop and foster relationships and partnerships with University, Medical Center and Health Systems departments to achieve crime prevention outcomes.

Supervise and coordinate activities of individuals assigned to the crime prevention unit or community policing activities.

This position will also facilitate and coordinate educational and community initiatives including both formal and informal get-togethers with various communities and the Citizen's Police Academy.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Demonstrated knowledge of crime prevention, Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), security technology and procedures normally acquired through experience in a related field and by completion of documented specialized training or an equivalent combination of relevant training and/or experience.

Experience

Applicants must be a member of the Duke University Police Department. Personal computer knowledge, including strong familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, and a demonstrated knowledge of police terminology and procedures is desired. Demonstrate strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
