Occupational Summary
Perform complex technical tasks associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of various medical gas systems. This position will be assigned to the Hospital Plumbing Trades Shop. The Medical Gas Technician will work in several buildings at Duke Hospital, Duke Clinic and Ambulatory sites as needed.
Provides overall management of the various medical gas and vacuum equipment and systems.
Work Performed
Perform specialized technical tasks including; inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs. Maintain all Medical Air and Vacuum pumps, compressors and associated equipment. Maintain Oxygen systems, gas cylinders, regulators and medical gas outlets. Complete daily, monthly, semi-annual and annual inspections and compliance testing as required.
Stays current with all applicable medical gas and vacuum compliance local, state and national codes such as NFPA 99.
Maintain appropriate documentation and maintenance/repair records to ensure compliance. Responsible for the required compliance and documentation for local, state and national agencies including The Joint Commission for all medical gas and vacuum systems.
Maintains all source valves, and alarm panels. Verification that all valves and alarms are working and labeled appropriately.
Maintains adequate reserve of Medical gases at all times. Works closely with the medical gas supply venders to make sure each site has adequate medical gas available.
Consult with equipment manufacturers for technical assistance; contact manufacturer for warranty service or service beyond warranty if circumstances dictate.
Coordination and Management of outside venders to make necessary repairs and complete routine maintenance on medical gas and vacuum systems and all associated components.
Research Manufacture sites, equipment manuals and online resources to obtain required replacement parts. Work with venders to acquire pricing and complete purchase requisitions for parts and materials.
Works closely with various engineers, project managers, contractors and supervisors to assure that all medical gas systems are selected and installed appropriately. Assures that all medical gas and vacuum installations and testing meets the compliance requirements.
Maintain the assigned medical gas storage locations for proper lighting. Maintains compliance of the medical gas storage including excessive storage, materials that do not belong, proper signage, security of the space and required ventilation of the spaces.
Advise management of general condition of equipment and systems and any unusual problems or concerns that may arise; make recommendations for improvements and upgrades for budget planning; compile and present data to support recommendations.
Provide technical assistance, instruction, training and consultation to other staff members for the resolution of special problems.
Provides training for other E&O staff members on the locations, routine maintenance and minor repairs of the medical gas systems.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts.
State of NC contractor's license in a specific trade may be required or preferred.
Required Certification ASSE 6010, 6040, 6020 or the ability to complete the required course and pass the exam for these certifications within 12-months of hire.
Certification ASSE 6030 verifier is preferred or ability to achieve within 24-months of hire.
Associate degree in Facility Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is desirable.
Experience
Minimum of six years' maintenance and repair experience related to medical gas or plumbing systems or six years of trades experience with at least one year related experience.
Valid N.C. Driver's license is required.
