Occupational Summary

Coordinate and supervise the maintenance and repair of Biological Containment Facilities (BCF) buildings and equipment to provide support to scientific research, DLAR operations, and administrative spaces ensuring conformity to federal, state, local and University levels of biohazard safety.

Work Performed

Coordinate and supervise the certification of all HVAC filtration, waste treatment, sterilization, and detoxification procedures to maintain equipment at levels meeting certification by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Sanitation Foundation; provide guidance and assistance to professional and technical personnel to ensure conformance with safety and decontamination procedures.

Assist medical investigators in personnel and administrative direction of BCF operations. Assist in the development of decontamination and detoxification procedures for the affected areas; implement safety and decontamination procedures in emergency situations.

Coordinate and participate in all maintenance activities of BCF buildings and systems; develop and coordinate a preventive maintenance program for all mechanical and electrical systems.

Maintain proper standards for confinement of infectious and toxic agents in isolation modules; ensure proper functioning of filtration and decontamination devices, chlorination control systems, and emergency power plant; monitor pest control program.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation scheduling; coordinate the training of BCF technical employees in appropriate biohazard and animal care practices and procedures.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education plus two years of specialized training in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or electrical systems including training in biohazard testing.

Experience

Work requires extensive knowledge of environments control systems and/or biohazard safety normally acquired through six years of electrical and/or HVAC maintenance experience.
