Occupational Summary

Perform general repairs and preventive maintenance on all steam distribution, chilled water, domestic water, air, gas and vacuum systems under the supervision of a qualified mechanic.

Work Performed

Clean mechanical rooms, pick up and deliver parts. Assist other mechanics as required/directed. Perform basic calculations and conversions. Perform basic steamfitting maintenance tasks given by higher level mechanic and/or supervisor. Use hand and power tools associated with the trade. Process hot work permits. Perform safety duties as a fire watch. Fill out paperwork including but not limited to work orders, inventory and preventive maintenance forms. Assist qualified mechanic with identifying and performing maintenance on various steam valves rated 150lbs to 300lbs. Assist qualified mechanic with performing minor maintenance tasks on low pressure steam components. Select, inspect, use and maintain block and tackle, chain hoists, come-alongs, jacks and tuggers for use in rigging. Install the appropriate pipe hangers for piping systems. Perform other related duties incidental to the work herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Received training on general OSHA standards and requirements. Received training on the use of portable fire extinguisher. Received training on hazardous waste awareness. Received training on asbestos hazards and safety. Completed Fleet Safety training. Received training on Computerized Maintenance Management System. Received training on Communication etiquette including phone, radio and customer service. Received training on hot work permits. Received training on fire watch safety procedures. Received training on confined space entry procedures. Received training on Lock-out/Tag-out procedures. Satisfied testing requirements of "Wheels of Learning" Curriculum for Steamfitter, Level 5.

Experience

Work requires two years of experience as a Steamfitter Apprentice or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
