Occupational Summary
Coordinate and perform a variety of duties in the preparation of manufacturing specifications and in the establishment and implementation of production schedules for the manufacture of various Duke Press publications; assist in training and directing the work of Production Assistants. Requires a Bachelor's and three years' experience.
Work Performed
Prepare manufacturing specifications for books and periodicals; make adjustments to specifications as required to meet specific needs.
Prepare manufacturing cost estimates for manuscripts and/or other elements; prepare specifications for quotations for suppliers; evaluate quotations and quality of work, and make recommendations to the Production Manager.
Establish and coordinate production schedules for the manufacture of various Duke Press publications; monitor progress, investigate delays, and take or recommend appropriate actions to ensure schedules are met.
Prepare specifications for production process to ensure proper location and printing of illustrations; evaluate quality of artwork to ensure quality meets established standards. Examine proofs for typographical errors and conformance to specifications as submitted to the printer; resolve queries and crossmark authors' and editors' corrections or proofs.
Maintain interface with editors, authors, printers, binders, and designers throughout production process; negotiate with editors and authors regarding budgetary and scheduling constraints.
Ensure the quality of final camera copy; check final journal product for quality.
Review manufacturing and freight billings for publications of books and journals to verify charges; maintain related budgetary records.
Prepare regular and special reports setting forth status of publication programs and of individual projects.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work required knowledge of grammatical rules and practices and mathematical principles as well as organizational and communications skills generally acquired through two years of post-secondary education.
Experience
Work generally requires three years of experience in a publication production position to acquire familiarity with applying printing specifications to publication.
