Occupational Summary
Perform a variety of complex duties involved in design and construction of advanced precision instruments and experimental equipment for utilization in research activities at Duke University.
Work Performed
Perform a variety of complex duties involved in the research, development, design, fabrication and testing of advanced precision instruments and experimental equipment for utilization in research activities at Duke University.
Confer with principal investigators to obtain necessary data for the development, design and construction of complex precision instruments and equipment; recommend modifications to specifications required to achieve desired results.
Determine materials, tolerances and stresses based on plans, drawings and specifications of various details; machine and process precision parts and fabricate complex instruments using various instrument shop equipment including lathes, milling machines, drills, welding and soldering equipment, and woodworking machines. Analyze job specifications and requirements received from outside customers and submit bids estimating time and cost necessary to complete project.
Provide technical assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty, student researchers and staff members for the resolution of specific problems.
Determine and order parts and supplies necessary for completion of assigned projects; maintain records of supplies used and time required for each project; recommend the purchase of new equipment as required.
Modify and repair instrument shop equipment as needed to ensure efficient operation; modify and repair printing equipment to include collators, paper cutters, folders, presses and other related printing equipment; establish and follow a schedule of preventive maintenance.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a general background in machine shop equipment operation, wood work and metal work generally acquired through a technical or vocational high school education.
Experience
Work requires eight years related experience such as machinist , tool or die maker or wood-worker to acquire competency in fabricating precision parts, instruments and equipment to support biomedical research and medical diagnoses; at least 3 years experience must be as an instrument maker, optical repair tech or biomedical equipment technician.
