Occupational Summary

Create accurate and effective illustrations, diagrams, animations, and other graphic design materials to convey medical topics for print and digital media.

Work Performed

Produce technically correct drawings, diagrams and animations to illustrate cellular processes, anatomical structures, surgical procedures, and other medical topics for use in publications, and research and teaching activities.

Draw illustrations for medical articles, books and presentations from self-directed research, observations, and ideas and rough drafts of others.

Understand general health science concepts and terminology to effectively communicate and collaborate with medical faculty.

Manage time and work assignments proficiently; provide/receive feedback on artwork for/from colleagues; assist in training new personnel Evaluate and recommend new methods, materials and equipment for use in medical illustration.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an understanding of health science topics with the ability to identify and implement the best illustrative techniques to communicate these topics, normally acquired through two years postsecondary training in medical illustration or commercial arts. A degree in medical illustration or related field is preferred.

Experience

Work requires three years of experience in medical illustration work to obtain considerable knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and surgical procedures as well as a variety of drawing media and techniques. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

Ability to communicate ideas and creative solutions through concept drawings in traditional and/or digital media

Working understanding of health science topics and terminology, health literacy standards, and communication strategies

Expertise in design software and methods, including typography, layout, and production

Working understanding of digital file types and color profile management

Ability to manage multiple projects and tight deadlines

Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a willingness to take direction

Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills

Video experience a plus, but not required
