Occupational Summary

The Supervisor of Sanitation and Recycling will plan and supervise the work of sanitation employees who manage solid waste and sustainability efforts at Duke. These employees are also responsible for sanitation efforts during university-wide special events as well as routine preventative maintenance of sanitation equipment.

Work Performed

Ensure sanitation and recycling employees maintain daily schedules and routes. Assign sanitation and recycling employees various duties not covered in daily schedules and routes. Conduct comprehensive inspections to monitor locations for quality control and to check the completion of work assignments.

Ensure that assignments are appropriately staffed and that employees have adequate supplies and equipment for completion of assignments. Perform various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, vacation schedules and conducting firststep grievance hearings.

Manages employee time including APi input. Uses EAM to track all work orders and special event assignments. Reviews and makes recommendations to improve all sanitation/recycling routes. Makes recommendations to improve recycling accessibility. Recommends bins, containers and vehicles for purchase.

Performs license and DOT checks monthly. Maintains files and records. Maintains inventory. Ensures cleanliness and maintenance of site locations.

Coordinates all special events recycling and waste collection, including but not limited to: football, other sporting events, move in/out, alumni week, graduation, and other events during the year. Works afternoons and weekends when necessary.

Works with Supervisor to develop event management work plans for multi- event times. Submits time worked and materials used to supervisor for charge outs. Post and maintain overtime logs that are required by contract.

Attends Facilities Management unit specific safety meetings. Ensures all safety programs/training for the unit are current. Maintains a safe working environment.

Discuss general sanitation and recycling procedures with personnel of the assigned area; recommendand implement changes and procedures. Provides timely customer service. Communicates the status and needs of sanitation and recycling regularly with their supervisor. Communicates with customers about service issues. Responds to and investigates problems and complaints received to ensure resolution.

Maintain records and submit reports concerning personnel, equipment, supplies, expense, and general sanitation and recycling activities. Track employee compliance to Union and University standards.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

High School equivalent education.

Experience

Three years of sanitation and or recycling experience required. Advance operation of heavy equipment and machinery used in the sanitation/recycling operation. Knowledge of environmental standards and compliance requirements. Customer relation and service techniques. Familiar with hazards and safety practices in the sanitation/recycling field.
