Occupational Summary

Coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use by physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Work Performed

Coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks to include chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic and other medical laboratory tests and examinations to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; record determinations and results for review by physician. Set up equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory tests.

Obtain specimens from patients as required; operate manual and automatic laboratory equipment to make qualitative and quantitive analyses of specimens.

Coordinate the preparation of culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions. Evaluate collected laboratory data and prepare reports outlining progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Participate in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques; plan and develop workshops.

Provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, and staff; arrange teaching or rotation schedules for students and new employees. Make work assignments; review the work of lower leve employees; assist in the training of new personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field. Certification as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized board/agency is also required.

Experience

Work requires 2 years of laboratory experience as a certified Medical Technologist.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
