Occupational Summary

Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks, tests and determinations involving the utilization of radioactive materials and measurement instrumentation in the Duke University Medical Center Division of Nuclear Medicine and the Division of Nuclear Cardiology.

Work Performed

Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical procedures to include a vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection and measurement instrumentation including rectilinear scanners, stationary imaging devices, scintillation camera and apparatus for in vitro counting. Calibrate and draw up radiopharmaceutical materials for administration to patients; formulate radiopharmaceutical materials from pre-prepared kits.

Calculate data to include results of patient studies and radioactive decay.

Obtain nursing care for assigned patients as required.

Calibrate instruments and review calibration data to detect trends indicating instrument malfunction.

Assist in the development and evaluation of new procedures and techniques to meet the needs of specific protocols as required; consult with physician and researchers concerning the application of nuclear medicine procedures and techniques.

Maintain inventory of supplies in assigned area; prepare and maintain records concerning radiopharmaceutical receiving, dispensing and disposal activities.

Provide instruction and technical guidance to nuclear medicine technology students; assist in training new employees.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires successful completion of an approved Nuclear Medicine Technology training program. Applicants must have Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certifying Board (NMTCB), American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) - Nuclear Medicine, or American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) - Nuclear Medicine registry or be registry eligible.

Experience

None required beyond above education/certification requirements.
