Occupational Summary
Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks associated with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of electronic and scientific equipment and instruments in support of oceanographic research; serve as a seagoing technician on a research vessel.
Work Performed
Coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks associated with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of electronic and scientific equipment and instruments in support of oceanographic research.
Serve as a seagoing technician on the R/V Cape Hatteras or other research vessel and repair or replace malfunctioning parts to ensure the successful completion of research operations during cruises.
Repair a variety of equipment brought on board by scientists or electronic and scientific instrumentation belonging to the ship; repair electronic circuits by replacing malfunctioning parts and soldering broken connections.
Inspect malfunctioning instruments or components, analyze causes and plan appropriate maintenance or replacement procedures; follow a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance.
Provide technical assistance to scientists and other personnel and advise regarding the selection of appropriate instrumentation for research procedures.
Act as liaison between scientists and the ship's crew and instruct various personnel concerning proper use of equipment and appropriate resolution of operational problems. Coordinate and monitor activities associated with the University's radiation safety program ensuring that scientists and other personnel are aware of and comply with policies and procedures.
Supervise and coordinate the deployment, operation and retrieval of scientific instrumentation and equipment ensuring that deck operations are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a background in Electronics normally acquired through a two year Associate degree program in Electronics to become familiar with electronic equipment and experimental devices and apparatus common to an electronics repair facility.
Experience
No additional experience is required beyond the Associate degree.
Credit for directly related experience is given on a two for one basis (i.e., four years of related experience are required in lieu of an Associate Degree).
