Occupational Summary
Operates steam boilers, chilled water systems, pumping systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation; monitor HVAC and electrical systems; assist in the training of plant personnel and assume the duties of the plant supervisor when required.
Work Performed
Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas
Monitors equipment, conduct rounds and maintains records of equipment operational status
(Assist in) Locally operate steam boilers, chilled water systems, pumping systems, and auxiliary equipment at the direction of the control room operator or superiors
Perform (Assists with) lock-out/tag-out of equipment for maintenance personnel
Remains current on all changes in operating procedures, new equipment, and related systems
Performs (Assists in) troubleshooting and initial root cause analysis on equipment failures and operational upsets
Assist mechanics and technicians as required/directed to troubleshoot issues
Assist other operators as required/directed.
Assists in observation and monitoring of electrical systems
Assists in plant equipment training
Locate major branches, valves, piping systems and lines to troubleshoot plant or distribution problems
Perform basic calculations and conversions
Use computer software applicable to operations
Diagnose operational problems, control and equipment malfunctions, and initiate corrective action. Notify supervisor for major repairs.
Perform chemical testing and analysis of process water and maintain proper chemical levels within design limits
Maintain chemical treatment equipment such as softeners, polishers, filters, pumps, etc.
Maintain chemical logs accurately and legibly
Conduct job-site inspections to determine compliance to standards and codes.
Acknowledge alarms, dispatch to maintenance as appropriate, contact supervisors and management in case of disruption of service to customers
Adjust automatic control devices via computer control system
Run control system reports as directed
Ability to read process and instrumentation diagrams, one line diagrams, and plan views to troubleshoot and diagnose problems
Review design documents and evaluate compliance to standards and specifications.
Provides technical guidance and direction to lower level personnel
Updated system graphics as directed
Assume the duties and responsibilities of the shop supervisor in their absence as needed
Analyze system failures and recommend proper corrective actions.
Train lower level personnel in all phases of plant operation and maintenance
Provide technical guidance and direction to lower level personnel
Perform other related duties incidental to the work above
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
Work requires five years experience in operating utility systems equipment, facilities or distribution systems. Must pass the Basic Duke Utility Systems Operations Test within 6 months of entering position
