Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of tasks to facilitate the efficient flow of laundry through the laundry process to include, but not limited to soiled sorting, operating finishing equipment, hand folding, mending, and filling delivery carts.

Work Performed

Receive a variety of laundry items such as soiled linens and uniforms; verify laundry items against laundry tickets, lift bags of soiled laundry from incoming carts and empty contents onto sorting belt; sort and use marking machine to print identifying information on laundry items. Assemble required laundry to fill requests from Medical Center organizational units; count items required and place in laundry basket; check, count and wrap laundry bundles; attach laundry request or ticket to competed orders. Weigh completed orders; record weight of each order on master laundry weight sheet by organizational unit.

Receive and assemble special requests for flatwork laundry, locate items in laundry and have them washed, dried and ironed as required.

Fold pressed and unpressed items including sheets and towels; return all insufficiently laundered items to washers.

Operate commercial laundry equipment such as Flatwork Ironer, Small Piece Folder and Garment Steam Finisher by feeding articles such as sheets, bedspreads, uniforms, towels and pillow cases into such equipment; catch, fold and stack ironed flatwork.

Operate sewing machine to patch, mend and darn such items as linens and uniforms.

Operate steam-pressing machines to press a variety of garments to include hospital uniforms, laboratory coats and surgical gowns; clean pressing machines and replace press pad covers.

Maintain log of items processed by type and count for billing and production reports.

Correct equipment malfunction such as jamming by adjusting speed, roller pressure, and folding size, and report complex malfunctions to supervisor.

Maintain orderly condition of assigned work area. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires the ability to understand and follow instructions generally acquired through a partial high school education. Ability to lift 50 pounds and to push and pull linen carts weighting 150 to 200 pounds required.

None required beyond education and training.
