Occupational Summary

Design, implement and maintain a variety of complex data bases and data base systems and perform various network administration activities to meet departmental requirements in support of administrative, research and/or educational activities. Participate in software development for in-house usage and outside distribution as requested.

Work Performed

Design, implement and maintain a variety of complex data bases and data base systems for access by complex statistical packages to meet departmental requirements in support of administrative, research and/or educational activities; modify or create data bases, editing and menu facilities and reporting and support programs. Respond to requests for information from existing data bases by producing specialized reports, files, research samples, and other data as needed.

Perform various network administration activities including, but not limited to, network maintenance and upgrading, workstation and printer maintenance, user account maintenance, network access and backups; maintain, install and upgrade network and stand-alone software; evaluate software applications and recommend appropriate purchases and utilization; serve as troubleshooter for software and hardware problems.

Participate in software development to specification in a team environment for both in-house usage and outside distribution as assigned; fully develop, implement and maintain software applications in Hypertalk, C or other environment as specified.

Consult with departmental as well as outside users as required to provide training, general data processing assistance and technical guidance and direction; document departmental procedures concerning data processing operations.

Integrate various systems through data base design as well as editing and consolidating previous data bases into up-to-date formats.

Participate in other routine data processing activities as instructed such as maintaining inventory of computer hardware and software, registering new hardware and software and maintaining license agreements, performing file translations or transfers across various platforms, and developing and maintaining proper backup routines. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level


Work requires analytical skills normally acquired through two years post-secondary education in mathematics, computer science or a related field, or equivalent technical training in a computer-related field.


Work requires two years of experience to become familiar with data management techniques utilizing relational data base management systems and network administration as well as a variety of computing systems.
