Occupational Summary

Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned shift of both police and security officers in enforcing laws to protect lives and Duke University property, including the campus and medical center.

Work Performed

Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned shift and perform a variety of police duties in patrolling the University community to detect crime and arrest law violators; patrol parking lots, outlying University properties and University buildings to ensure security.

Regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic; investigate traffic accidents and file preliminary accident reports; check all automobiles on University property for improper parking, overtime parking and display of University registration decal; issue tickets for violation of parking regulations. Provide emergency service and temporary first aid treatment to members of the University community and visitors; provide emergency escort service to students and staff where necessary.

Prepare and present testimony in court concerning traffic violation and criminal offenses.

Provide information about Duke University to students, staff and the general public. Escort money from various special University events.

Make work assignments; review the work of lower level employees; assist in the training of new personnel. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Currently certified as a law enforcement officer with general powers of arrest or have been certified within the last six months.

Work requires communicative and analytical skills normally acquired through an associate's degree in one of the social sciences. Work requires North Carolina Company Police Certification.

Experience

Work requires a knowledge of law enforcement methods, techniques and procedures normally acquired through four years of law enforcement experience and at least one year of lead employee or supervisory experience.

Work requires North Carolina Driver's License.
