Occupational Summary

Perform journeyman level work in at least two specialty areas of the skilled crafts and perform general routine maintenance and repair work on Duke University Marine Laboratory buildings, equipment, vessels, facilities and grounds as assigned.

Work Performed

Perform journeyman level work in at least two specialty areas of the skilled crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or automotive repairs; perform general routine maintenance and repair work on buildings, equipment, vessels and facilities as assigned.

Maintain, adjust and repair mechanical, electrical and refrigeration and air conditions equipment; install, maintain, adjust and repair mechanical and plumbing fixtures and lines; maintain and paint buildings, walls, woodwork, equipment and furnishings.

Assess need for, and make repairs and corrections to, facilities and equipment as required; notify supervisor of required major repairs.

Install and repair equipment and facilities according to blueprints, sketches and/or verbal instructions; perform maintenance to Duke University Marine Laboratory equipment, vessels, facilities, and grounds including carpentry, welding, sandblasting, masonry, electrical, and painting work as assigned; receive and log emergency calls.

Perform a variety of manual duties involved in the care and maintenance of the Marine Laboratory grounds to include planting, fertilizing and watering grass, flowers and shrubbery; sweep walkways, drives and parking areas.

Operate and perform routine maintenance and repairs on grounds equipment to include power mower, manual and power shears and edgers; clean and maintain Marine Laboratory vehicles and vessels.

Operate Marine Laboratory small boats used by researchers, students and visitors for dredging, chumming and other purposes; perform a variety of duties as Deck Hand of Duke University's First Mate.

Provide technical guidance to lower level personnel.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades.

Experience

Work requires the performance of journeyman level work in at least two specialty areas of the skilled crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, automotive, or refrigeration and air conditioning equipment repair to acquire skills necessary for the general maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, vessels, facilities and grounds, normally acquired through a total of two years of related experience.
