Occupational Summary

Perform painting, sheetrock repair, small plaster repair, mixing of colors, stains and prepare surfaces for these products and use coatings on University facilities. Provide technical assistance to Project Managers, contractors and lower level personnel

Work Performed

Assist painters in assigned work.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Read blueprints. Use riggings, hoist, ladders, scaffolding, lifts and other various equipment used in painting.

Repair and finish drywall for painting. Properly use, care, and maintenance for/or equipment used in painting trade.

Use hand and power tools safely. Erect scaffolding, ladders and lifts.

Knowledge of safety procedures for working on ladders, scaffolds and lifts. Correct protect surfaces adjacent to paint spraying areas.

Select brushes, rollers, pads, mitts and other related accessories for applying paint. Correctly store and maintain brushes and rollers.

Calculate scaffold loads, area load, live loads, concentrated loads, and cantilevered loads. Safely operate and maintain all paint equipment.

Use tools, materials and other methods for preparing surfaces for paint, and or coating. Identify different types of sealant and filters and apply these to construction substrates.

Use sand blasting equipment correctly and safely. Identify failures of paints/coatings on exterior and interior substrates and find causes and remedies of these failures.

Follow detailed procedures and techniques for wood surface preparation and application of clear finishes to various kinds of wood.

Recognize and remedy paint/coating failures caused by improper preparation and application of coatings.

Recognize and remedy coating discoloration.

Use correct procedures for mixing, tinting, and matching colors.

Use color wheel, the Munsell, Federal Standard 595B, and other color systems.

Use correct methods for limiting dust, debris, and hazardous materials from contaminating the environment.

Estimate a job to submit a bid on.

Prepare and use contract documents.

Plan and accomplish a job from start to finish, with an emphasis on the use of drawings, specifications, schedules, and other instructions.

Use various kinds of chemical cleaners and strippers to clean and/or remove unwanted material from substrates.

Control materials and tools/equipment.

Creating, glazing, antiquating, stippling, mottling, gliding, marbling, and graining decorative finishes.

Complete the process for wall-covering from start to finish, failures and remedies of wall-covering.

Complete surface preparations.

Install different types of adhesives.

Ability to use methods of transferring graphic patterns to a surface.

Select tools, materials, and methods used for cleaning and preparing surfaces/substrates by chemical stripping, pickling, high-pressure water-jetting, and ultra high-pressure water jetting.

Select paint systems and different functional categories of paints and coatings. Identify the equipment and procedures used to apply coatings by the following methods: brushes and rollers, conventional sprayers, airless and air-assisted sprayers, high-volume low pressure (HVLP) sprayers, electrostatic sprayers, plural component proportioning equipment, wire flame and wire arc sprayers, and dry powder coating application process.

Perform various formal quality control tasks and procedures used to govern the quality and acceptance of work performed by those in the industrial painting industry Identify methods, equipment, and test instruments used to perform tasks in accordance with the requirements of the various ASTM and SSPC/NACE standards governing quality control and quality assurance.

Use sealers and putties that are used in conjunction with tank and vessel reinforced lining systems.

Use sealers and putties conjunction with fire resistant and fire retardant sealing materials. Use guidelines for selecting the materials.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires an educational background normally equivalent to a high school education with course work in skilled crafts or trades training, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Completed forklift training.

Experience

Completed Level 7, Painter Senior I program requirement for this position or have 5 years experience in painter trade and is able to pass requirements for Level 8, Senior II Painter
